Job Overview

The Development Associate role is an early career opportunity for nonprofit professionals who are eager to have a deep and lasting impact on the sustainability of housing and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness in Northern Virginia. This position will work closely with our development team, manage donor and grants data, contribute to donor relations, and support fundraising initiatives. As a Development Associate, you'll help drive our mission forward by mobilizing the resources our work requires. You will collaborate across teams, gain hands-on experience in nonprofit development, and develop relational and analytical fundraising skills. You will support Development Team staff across fundraising projects, particularly the Development Systems & Reporting Manager and the Grants Manager on donor and grants management. This position plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, organization, and timely execution of the systems and administrative processes that support Homestretch’s fundraising and development efforts.

Development Associate Responsibilities & Duties 


  • Manage and update donor and grants databases (i.e. Donor Perfect and Instrumentl) and ensure accurate record-keeping.
  • Maintain and update grants digital filing and organization.
  • Manage and update development and grants calendars, including deadlines.
  • Prepare and send donor acknowledgement letters and correspondence.
  • Prepare administrative attachments/materials for grant proposals, reports, or other deliverables.
  • Support data entry in grant application and reporting systems.
  • Generate reports and internal development materials (i.e. donor records, grant summaries, prospect briefs) for internal communications.
  • Collaborate across Homestretch teams (development, finance, program) to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Support donor stewardship activities, including tracking follow-ups, donor touchpoints, and stewardship opportunities.
  • Assist with donor communications, special appeals, campaigns, and events as needed.
  • Process and reconcile gifts and pledges in coordination with Finance, ensuring accurate donor records and timely deposits/acknowledgments.
  • Conduct routine data quality checks and maintain accurate, complete, and standardized donor and grants records.
