The Principal Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving technical excellence across multiple teams. This role involves architecting cloud-native, distributed systems with integrated AI/ML solutions to support high availability and real-time processing. The position requires strategic mentorship, cross-functional collaboration, and ownership of the full software development lifecycle. The engineer will influence architectural decisions, promote innovation, and ensure alignment with long-term business goals while maintaining quality and operational metrics. This leadership role fosters continuous improvement and technical growth within the engineering organization.
About the team:
Focusing on customer, associate and business needs, this team works with Walmart International, which includes more than 5,200 retail units, operating in 23 countries such as Canada, Central America, Chile, China, India, Mexico and South Africa to name a few.
Within Walmart International, this team is part of International Sam’s Tech and drives strategic initiatives for Sam’s Club markets worldwide. The team focuses on developing and maintaining platform level software that enhances operational efficiency and delivers cost savings to customers while ensuring an excellent experience.
What you'll do:
  • Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and AI/ML frameworks aligned with strategic roadmaps.
  • Drive full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and real-time data processing.
  • Architect and implement cloud-native distributed systems integrating AI agents and model-driven design principles.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, influencing architectural standards and fostering engineering and operational excellence.
  • Promote continuous improvement through innovation, knowledge sharing, and adoption of emerging technologies.
  • Ensure self-accountability and enforce highest standards for overall engineering and operational excellence of the respective areas of oversight
  • Stay at the forefront of technological advancements and influence organizational adoption

What you'll bring:
  • Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable, cloud-native architectures and reusable tooling.
  • Proven expertise in software development lifecycle management.
  • Strong background in AI/ML integration and building intelligent software systems using multiple programming languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply model-driven design and technical solution design to complex distributed systems.
  • Skilled in mentoring engineers and providing strategic technical guidance to promote innovation and engineering excellence.
  • 16+ years of experience in the design and development of highly scalable distributed applications and platforms - particularly for large scale, multi-tenant, distributed, multi-tenant, SaaS products
  • Hands-on experience in Microservices, and RESTful web services development in Java SpringBoot, Spring Kafka (or equivalent framework)
