GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Certified Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for preparing and sterilizing medical equipment and instruments for surgeries and procedures, ensuring patient safety and hygiene through proper decontamination, assembly, and storage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fosters a positive and successful working environment, creating partnership with team members, leadership, and providers.
  • Sterilizes instruments and equipment using methods like autoclaving to eliminate microorganisms.
  • Cleans and decontaminates surgical instruments, medical devices, and equipment to remove contaminants.
  • Adheres to established protocols for cleaning, decontaminating, and preparing medical supplies.
  • Operates and maintains decontamination equipment.
  • Monitors and documents sterilization processes, including biological and chemical indicators.
  • Ensures equipment functions properly and is maintained.
  • Assembles and packages sterilized instruments and equipment into trays or kits for use in procedures.
  • Prepares surgical case carts according to physician preferences.
  • Maintains inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Distributes sterilized supplies and equipment to various departments within the healthcare facility.
  • Maintains accurate records of sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, and inventory.
  • Assists with surgical preps and patient positioning.
  • Assists in inventory management and restocks room after procedure.
  • Ensures operating rooms are clean and stocked with necessary supplies.
Requirements:

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge and ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
  • Knowledge of safe care and handling of instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of up-to-date surgical technology, medical terminology and procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment function sufficient to be able to determine operational adequacy and to distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunction.
  • Knowledge of applicable sanitary, infection control, and safety standards sufficient to be able to perform all assignments within the safety parameters.
  • Knowledge of processes, procedures, quality assurance, chemicals and medical instruments sufficient to be able to decontaminate and sterilize equipment, supplies and instruments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of sterile processing experience in a hospital or surgery center.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Certification as a sterile processing technician
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
