What is a practicum?

A practicum is a structured, practical experience that allows students or trainees to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world professional setting. Practicums are common in fields such as education, social work, healthcare, and psychology, and are often a required part of academic programs. During a practicum, participants work under supervision, complete specific tasks or projects, and gain hands-on experience that prepares them for their future careers. The experience is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and professional practice.

What types of projects or assignments can I expect during a practicum, and how will these experiences prepare me for a full-time role?

During a practicum, you can expect to work on hands-on projects or assignments that are directly related to your field of study, such as assisting with research, supporting client projects, or managing specific tasks under supervision. These experiences are designed to bridge academic learning with real-world application, allowing you to develop practical skills, gain industry insights, and build professional relationships. You'll often collaborate with team members and receive feedback from supervisors, which helps prepare you for the responsibilities and expectations of a full-time role after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a practicum role, and why are they important?

To excel in a practicum position, candidates generally need foundational knowledge in their field of study, relevant coursework, and any prerequisite qualifications specified by their academic program. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, software, or laboratory equipment—depending on the discipline—is often required, along with adherence to any necessary safety or compliance certifications. Strong communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are crucial soft skills for building relationships and maximizing learning during the placement. These competencies are vital as they enable students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, gain practical experience, and prepare for professional careers.

What is the difference between Practicum vs Intern?

AspectPracticumIntern
CredentialsOften requires relevant coursework or trainingMay require coursework, but less formal
Work EnvironmentSupervised, educational setting, often part-timeVaries; can be part-time or full-time, in professional settings
PurposeTo gain practical experience and fulfill educational requirementsTo gain industry experience and explore career options
DurationTypically fixed, aligned with academic scheduleVaries; often seasonal or short-term

Practica are primarily educational experiences designed to complement coursework, often with academic supervision. Internships are more industry-focused, providing hands-on work experience, and may be paid or unpaid. Both roles help individuals develop skills, but practica are usually tied to academic programs, while internships are more directly industry-oriented.

Job description

Description
The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Colby-Sawyer College invites applications for a part-time (20 hours per week) Coordinator of Practicum Education. This staff position supports the Director of Practicum Education in the coordination, administration, and ongoing strengthening of practicum education within a student-centered, fully online MSW program.
The Coordinator will assist with student placement processes, agency communication, practicum documentation, site supervisor support, virtual site visits, and monitoring of student progress in practicum settings. The role is intended to provide direct support to the Practicum Director and to help ensure that students, agencies, and site supervisors have a clear, organized, and responsive practicum experience.
Start date is January 4, 2027.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the vetting, approval, and ongoing communication with practicum agencies and supervisors.
  • Support placement processes, including student matching and completion of required practicum documentation and agency clearances.
  • Support the maintenance of practicum manuals, policies, forms, orientation materials, and assessment tools.
  • Assist with site instructor orientation and training.
  • Support data collection related to practicum placement, student progress, and CSWE competency assessment.
  • Participate in virtual site visits and placement check-ins.
  • Identify and respond to placement concerns in consultation with the Director of Practicum Education.
  • Communicate with students, field instructors, faculty, and advisors regarding practicum-related needs.
  • Support the development of new practicum opportunities, particularly in New Hampshire and the Northeast.
  • Assist with practicum-related accreditation documentation and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Monitor assigned field placements and communicate with Program Director regarding any disruptions or issues.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors and instructors to address academic and professional issues as they relate to student practicum placements.
  • Attend weekly program meetings (attendance at monthly departmental and faculty meetings is optional.)

Requirements
  • An MSW from a CSWE-accredited program.
  • At least two years of post-MSW clinical experience.
  • Experience working with placing social work students in practicum/field settings, field supervision, and social work field education.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health, medical social work, school social work, child welfare, or other community-based practice settings relevant to MSW education.

Preferred Experience:
  • LICSW, LCSW, or equivalent independent clinical social work licensure.
  • Experience serving as a site supervisor, practicum liaison, or practicum coordinator within a CSWE-accredited social work program.
  • Experience working in an online or hybrid higher education environment.
  • Familiarity with online practicum management systems (e.g. Time2Track, Sonia, Tevera).
  • Experience developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community agencies and practicum education partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize among multiple projects while maintaining strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the social work profession, ethical practice, and anti-racist, anti-oppressive practices.
  • Knowledge of the New Hampshire practicum landscape, including community agencies, healthcare systems, schools, and nonprofit organizations that support MSW practicum education.

This position is initially structured as a part-time, 20-hour-per-week role. Depending upon student enrollment, practicum placement volume, program need, and institutional approval, the position may be considered for conversion to a full-time.
Candidates, please submit the following:
  • A letter of interest addressing your qualifications, experience with social work practicum education, and interest in joining the Colby-Sawyer College MSW Program.
  • Current curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
  • Contact information for three professional references. References will not be contacted without prior notice to the candidate.

All materials must be submitted for an application to be reviewed, and formal review of materials will begin on August 24, 2026. Questions may be directed to MSW Program Director kate.turcotte@colby-sawyer.edu.
