Job Title: Perioperative Nurse
Reports To: Surgical Services Manager
Supervises: None
Overtime Status: Exempt X Nonexempt
Attendance Requirement: 99% scheduled attendance each calendar year
Physical Demand Level: Heavy
*Physical Demand Level determined as per Section 37.02 U.S. Department of Labor Physical Demand Characteristics of Work
Job Summary: The perioperative nurse plans, coordinates, delivers and evaluates nursing care to patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during surgical or other invasive procedures. The perioperative nurse plans and implements nursing care to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual responses of the patient having a surgical or invasive procedure. May also perform in the surgical technician role.
Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the instrument and equipment set-up for your OR, includingutilizationof preference cards and ability toanticipateyour surgeonsneeds
  • Coordinate and oversee your room during a case as the circulator
  • Facilitate effectiveand efficient transition between surgical procedures
  • Utilizeappropriate bodymechanics in movingpatients to stretchers and OR tables to prevent injury
  • Managepatients care and medication, includingassistancewith anesthesia
  • Consistently reviewcharts for completeness,in accordance withdocumentation protocols prior to and after the surgical procedure
  • Ensures that the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient. Works side by side with scrub nurses to helpmaintainthe sterile field in the operating room.
  • Prepares the patient for the procedure and handles the preparation for the operating room before the surgery takes place. Must have a strong attention to detail and physical stamina to handle long, arduous work hours.
  • Assess the patient's condition before a surgical procedure. Assesses the needs of the patient during theprocedure,to ensure the best outcome.
  • Works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
  • Administer pre-operative medications and intravenous therapy as prescribed
  • Monitor patients until transfer to the OR
  • Instruct patients and familiesregardingmedications and treatment instructions

Education/Certification/Licenses:
  • Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing; current state RN or LPN License.
  • CPRrequired.
  • ACLSrequired.
  • Minimum one year in pre-operative, intra-operativeand post-operative surgical patient care.
Additional Requirements: As needed by the Surgical Services Manager
  • Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisivejudgmentand the ability to work with minimal supervision in afast pacedenvironment.
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.
