What is a postal service window clerk?

Postal Service Window Clerks are frontline employees who work at post office counters, assisting customers with mailing letters and packages, selling postage and shipping supplies, and providing information about postal services. They handle transactions, process money orders, and help customers with issues such as change of address or lost mail. Window Clerks play a key role in ensuring efficient customer service and the smooth operation of the post office. They are trained to follow postal regulations and maintain accurate records of all transactions.

What does a postal service window clerk do?

When you work as a postal service window clerk, one of your biggest responsibilities is being the face of the United States Postal Service for customers in your area. You serve customers by selling stamps, pricing packages and preparing them for pickup, accepting letters and distributing post office box mail, and accepting payment for other postal services provided by your branch. Your duties mean you need a working knowledge of prices and products used to ship items. Additionally, you need financial literacy skills to count change to give to customers and perform drawer audits. Other beneficial skills include excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to learn and follow protocol.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a postal service window clerk, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Postal Service Window Clerk, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Why Concordia?

At Concordia College, your work contributes to something bigger. Every role plays a part in supporting our students, strengthening our campus community, and advancing our mission. Here, you'll join a collaborative community where your contributions are valued, and your work can make a meaningful difference.

About the Role:

The Post Office Manager is responsible for the secure and efficient operation of the campus post office, serving students and the business needs of the College. The position manages mail and package services, the customer service window, postal systems and records, and relationships with carriers and vendors. This position also supervises the Postal Clerk and supports Campus Information and broader campus operations as assigned.

Flexible FTE: This position offers the option to work between .75 and 1.0 FTE (approximately 30-40 hours per week) based on the selected candidate's preferred schedule.

What You'll Do:

  1. Manage daily campus post office operations, including the receipt, sorting, secure storage, tracking, and distribution of mail, packages, and other deliveries.
  2. Provide excellent customer service to students, employees, and visitors by managing the service window, processing outgoing mail and postage, and responding to mailing and delivery questions.
  3. Oversee postal systems, records, and resources, including postage meters, mailing and tracking systems, postal accounts, supplies, cash transactions, invoices, and activity records.
  4. Coordinate with postal carriers and vendors to manage pickup and delivery schedules, resolve service issues, and maintain reliable campus mail services.
  5. Supervise and support the Postal Clerk, including scheduling, work direction, coverage planning, and coordination of day-to-day priorities.
  6. Support Campus Information and other campus operations by providing backup coverage and assisting with special projects, events, and operational needs during lower-volume periods.

You'll Thrive Here If You:

  • Enjoy helping others and providing friendly, responsive service to students, employees, and visitors.
  • Take pride in keeping things organized, accurate, and running smoothly behind the scenes.
  • Are dependable and comfortable balancing routine daily responsibilities with changing priorities and time-sensitive needs.
  • Communicate effectively, take initiative, and are comfortable solving problems independently when they arise.
  • Enjoy working collaboratively and supporting others while also taking ownership of your area of responsibility.
  • Find meaning in contributing your skills to the work of a mission-driven organization.
