The Role and Why It's Important

Our Customer Service team members are the friendly face of some of our most important in-store services, helping customers with everything from mailing packages and sending money to cashing checks and purchasing licenses. In this role, you'll handle a wide variety of transactions accurately and efficiently while making every customer feel welcomed and valued.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one

  • Weigh postal packages, run mail through meters, and process certified, express, UPS, registered, and insured mail

  • Process Western Union orders and send faxes for customers

  • Sell money orders and cash payroll, personal, ADC, and social security checks

  • Sell hunting and fishing licenses

  • Break down and put money in utility drawers and process paid outs

  • Sign on the postal department, break down, and turn off the postal register

  • Count daily coupons and process refunds for customers and department-approved refunds

  • Sign on and off lottery machines, sell and redeem lottery tickets

  • Assist customers with dry cleaning where applicable and process bottle refunds

  • Assist customers at registers and in other areas of the store as needed

  • Answer the telephone and use the intercom system using appropriate procedures

  • Remove trash in a timely manner and maintain a clean, organized work area

  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Solve practical problems and interpret instructions across a variety of situations with limited standardization

  • Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages accurately

  • File, post, and organize materials; copy data accurately between records; and gather basic information as needed

  • Guide customers and provide clear, helpful direction in a professional manner

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, team members, and store leadership

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required

  • Over six months up to one year of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-paced role in a retail store environment where you will be on your feet and handling a variety of customer transactions throughout your shift. You will have continuous exposure to dirt and noise. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
