How much do portfolio analyst jobs pay per year?
What is a portfolio analyst?
A portfolio analyst, sometimes called a portfolio manager, is a financial professional who helps clients make investment decisions about stocks, bonds, and commodities. You may be a buy-side analyst, working with investors, or a sell-side analyst, working with sellers. As a portfolio analyst, your job duties include analyzing the financial markets, studying economic trends, and making recommendations to your clients about the most effective investment strategies for their financial goals. Some portfolio analysts stop working with clients and become financial analysts for media outlets.

| Required Credentials | Bachelor's degree, certifications like CFA often preferred | Bachelor's degree, CFA or similar certifications common |
| Work Environment | Financial firms, asset management companies, banks | Investment firms, asset management, research institutions |
| Key Responsibilities | Portfolio performance analysis, risk management, asset allocation | Market research, security analysis, investment recommendations |
While both roles involve finance and investments, Portfolio Analysts focus on managing entire portfolios and client strategies, whereas Investment Analysts concentrate on analyzing individual securities to inform investment decisions. The Portfolio Analyst (Institutional) is an exciting opportunity for an investment professional who enjoys pairing technical portfolio expertise with relationship-driven client support. In this role, you will be a key member of the Wealth Investment team, supporting portfolio management functions across client segments, partnering closely with Wealth Advisors, and contributing to Institutional and Retirement Plan Services relationships. This position offers exposure to portfolio strategy, investment analysis, client conversations, and cross-functional collaboration within a highly respected Wealth team.
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about markets, client outcomes, and continuous learning, and who wants to grow within an organization that values thoughtful advice, strong partnerships, and long-term success.
Key Responsibilities
Client Management
- Serve as an investment partner for Institutional and Retirement Plan Services clients by understanding goals, supporting retention and growth, and delivering a consistent, client-centric experience.
- Execute and maintain client investment strategies, participate in client meetings, communicate portfolio positioning, and document client activity accurately in CRM.
- Partner with Wealth Advisors to support client reviews, investment discussions, prospect opportunities, and client/advisor inquiries.
Portfolio Design & Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain investment strategies aligned with client objectives, risk profiles, and retention goals.
- Execute trades, rebalance portfolios, and support portfolio analytics, reporting, investment research, compliance filings, and ad hoc investment projects.
Business Development
- Collaborate with Wealth Advisors to assess prospect needs and align investment solutions that support Institutional and Retirement Plan Services growth opportunities.
- Represent the organization professionally in client, community, and industry settings.
Institutional and Retirement Plan Services Investment Support
- Support investment strategy, portfolio construction, investment menu design, and manager/model portfolio oversight for Institutional and Retirement Plan Services relationships.
- Review investment lineups, allocations, performance, expenses, risk characteristics, and other factors to support prudent recommendations and fiduciary discussions.
- Ensure recommendations align with investment policy statements, client objectives, internal guidelines, regulatory expectations, and current market and retirement plan trends.
Collaboration
- Partner with Wealth Advisors, Financial Planning, Private Banking, Commercial, and other internal teams to deliver integrated client solutions and seamless account support.
- Contribute to investment strategy, client experience, training, process improvement, and strong internal partnerships across Wealth, Planning, and Investment teams.
Risk Management, Regulation & Compliance
- Adhere to internal policies, supervisory standards, and regulatory requirements while identifying and mitigating portfolio and operational risks.
- Maintain complete, accurate client documentation and apply sound judgment in daily client and portfolio activities.
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 4 years of investment experience. A combination of appropriate education and experience will be considered.
- Series 65 required or needs to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- CFA, CFP, or progress toward designation preferred.
- Strong investment knowledge, portfolio management judgment, client communication, relationship-building, and risk awareness.
- Ability to manage moderate portfolio complexity with accuracy, professionalism, ethical judgment, and documentation discipline.
