What is a platform architect?

A Platform Architect is a technology professional responsible for designing and overseeing the structure and integration of complex software platforms within an organization. They ensure that the platform’s architecture supports current and future business requirements, scalability, security, and interoperability. Platform Architects collaborate with development, operations, and business teams to create robust solutions that align with organizational goals. Their role often involves selecting appropriate technologies, defining standards, and guiding the technical direction of platform development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Architect, you need deep expertise in systems architecture, cloud computing, and software engineering principles, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help coordinate cross-functional teams and translate business requirements into technical solutions. These skills are crucial for designing scalable, reliable platforms that support organizational growth and innovation.

What is the difference between Platform Architect vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectPlatform ArchitectCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires certifications like TOGAF, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud; strong understanding of architecture frameworksOften holds certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect
Work EnvironmentDesigns and oversees overall platform architecture, collaborating with development and operations teamsBuilds, deploys, and manages cloud-based solutions, focusing on implementation and operational tasks
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in large enterprises, tech companies, and organizations with complex infrastructure needsCommon in startups, tech firms, and organizations migrating to or managing cloud environments

While both roles involve cloud and infrastructure expertise, a Platform Architect focuses on designing the overall platform architecture, ensuring scalability and integration. In contrast, a Cloud Engineer implements and manages cloud solutions based on the architecture designed by the Platform Architect.

How much do platform architects make?

Platform architects typically earn between $100,000 and $160,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in cloud platforms and system design can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $180,000.

How does a platform architect typically collaborate with development and operations teams during a project lifecycle?

Platform Architects work closely with both development and operations teams to ensure that the architectural design aligns with project requirements and organizational goals. They often facilitate communication between these teams, translating business needs into technical solutions and guiding best practices for scalability, security, and maintainability. Regular meetings, design reviews, and documentation are common, and Platform Architects may also support DevOps initiatives by helping to automate deployment pipelines or optimize cloud infrastructure. This collaborative approach ensures that platforms are robust, efficient, and adaptable to change.

Position Summary
Flexjet is currently seeking a Microsoft Power Platform Architect who will be responsible for providing guidance and engineering solutions to fulfill business requirements using industry's best practices and in accordance with architectural standards and engineering methodology.
The Microsoft Power Platform Architect will be responsible for designing and governing enterprise-grade business solutions leveraging the Microsoft Power Platform, SharePoint, and the broader Microsoft 365 ecosystem. This role requires deep, hands-on expertise with Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and Dataverse, combined with strong architectural insight to ensure scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions. Key responsibilities include leading solution-design workshops, architecting low-code/no-code and pro-code integrations, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture standards, and managing data, security, and application lifecycle strategies.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Partner closely with the Team Lead, Product Owner, and business stakeholders to refine solution requirements, shape the product backlog, and align technical priorities with business strategy.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive architectural documentation, ensuring clarity, governance, and knowledge sharing across the Power Platform team and the broader IT organization.
  • Architect end-to-end Power Platform solutions-including applications, dashboards, automation, and integrations-leveraging the full Power Platform suite.
  • Lead requirements-gathering sessions with business users to translate functional needs into scalable, secure, and maintainable solution designs.
  • Design and implement data architectures using Dataverse and Power Platform connectors, ensuring optimal data integration, modeling, and governance.
  • Extend platform capabilities through Power Fx, JavaScript, and integrations with Azure services, ensuring adherence to best-practice architectural patterns.
  • Oversee solution testing, deployment pipelines, and lifecycle management within production environments, ensuring compliance with organizational governance frameworks.
  • Provide thought leadership, mentorship, and architectural guidance to development teams, supporting solution performance, maintainability, and alignment with standards.
  • Collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams with developers, project managers, business analysts, and other technical architects to drive cohesive and high-quality solution delivery.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with Power Apps and Power Automate, ideally in solution architecture or advanced development.
  • Expertise across the Power Platform: Canvas Apps, Model-Driven Apps, and Power Automate (cloud and desktop flows).
  • Strong experience with SQL and relational database design, data modeling, and enterprise data integration.
  • Demonstrated analytical, architectural, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with APIs, custom connectors, and integration patterns for external systems.
  • Solid understanding of performance optimization, security, and governance principles within the Power Platform ecosystem.
  • Background in Microsoft development technologies such as SQL Server, SSRS, C#, .NET, JavaScript, or HTML5.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps (ADO) and Agile delivery methodologies.
  • Proficiency with GitHub, Azure DevOps, Visual Studio, or comparable source control and CI/CD tools.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Champion a customer-centric approach to service delivery, ensuring timely resolution of user issues and inquiries.
  • Ability to quickly learn new concepts and software as necessary.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to an existing, complex environment.
  • Candidate should be self-motivated, independent, and exhibit relationship management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills that promote and foster a team culture.
  • Candidate should drive towards team solutions instead of independent heroism
  • Possess excellent organizational skills, and communication skills both written and verbal.

Desired Skills
  • Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Solution Architect Expert
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate
  • Experience with software development processes and methodologies preferred
