What is a platform architect?

A Platform Architect is a technology professional responsible for designing and overseeing the structure and integration of complex software platforms within an organization. They ensure that the platform’s architecture supports current and future business requirements, scalability, security, and interoperability. Platform Architects collaborate with development, operations, and business teams to create robust solutions that align with organizational goals. Their role often involves selecting appropriate technologies, defining standards, and guiding the technical direction of platform development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Platform Architect, you need deep expertise in systems architecture, cloud computing, and software engineering principles, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help coordinate cross-functional teams and translate business requirements into technical solutions. These skills are crucial for designing scalable, reliable platforms that support organizational growth and innovation.

What is the difference between Platform Architect vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectPlatform ArchitectCloud Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires certifications like TOGAF, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud; strong understanding of architecture frameworksOften holds certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect
Work EnvironmentDesigns and oversees overall platform architecture, collaborating with development and operations teamsBuilds, deploys, and manages cloud-based solutions, focusing on implementation and operational tasks
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in large enterprises, tech companies, and organizations with complex infrastructure needsCommon in startups, tech firms, and organizations migrating to or managing cloud environments

While both roles involve cloud and infrastructure expertise, a Platform Architect focuses on designing the overall platform architecture, ensuring scalability and integration. In contrast, a Cloud Engineer implements and manages cloud solutions based on the architecture designed by the Platform Architect.

How much do platform architects make?

Platform architects typically earn between $100,000 and $160,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in cloud platforms and system design can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $180,000.

How does a platform architect typically collaborate with development and operations teams during a project lifecycle?

Platform Architects work closely with both development and operations teams to ensure that the architectural design aligns with project requirements and organizational goals. They often facilitate communication between these teams, translating business needs into technical solutions and guiding best practices for scalability, security, and maintainability. Regular meetings, design reviews, and documentation are common, and Platform Architects may also support DevOps initiatives by helping to automate deployment pipelines or optimize cloud infrastructure. This collaborative approach ensures that platforms are robust, efficient, and adaptable to change.

Job description

Overview

Please note this role is based in our Phoenix, AZ Support Office.  This role owns the architecture and evolution of our data infrastructure across on-premises Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, and open-source relational platforms including PostgreSQL, while championing modern DataOps and cloud-native practices across the organization.

The Platform Architect serves as the technical authority for data platform decisions, partnering with engineering, analytics, and business teams to deliver scalable, secure, and highly available data systems. The ideal candidate brings deep SQL Server expertise alongside hands-on experience with cloud database platforms, infrastructure-as-code, and CI/CD pipelines for data workloads.

This role operates within a hybrid Agile/ITIL model and requires both independent ownership of complex architectural initiatives and strong cross-functional collaboration. Flexibility for on-call coverage and off-hours maintenance windows is required.

Essential Functions
  • Define and own the enterprise data architecture roadmap, aligning platform strategy with business objectives and technology trends.
  • Lead the design and governance of MS SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, and related relational platforms across development, staging, and production.
  • Architect and implement high-availability and disaster recovery solutions including AlwaysOn Availability Groups, failover clustering, and cloud-native replication.
  • Drive DataOps adoption by integrating database changes into CI/CD pipelines, automating deployments, and managing infrastructure-as-code (IaC) for data platform resources.
  • Establish and enforce data platform standards, naming conventions, security controls, and governance policies.
  • Lead performance engineering efforts, including proactive query tuning, index strategy, workload management, and capacity planning for multi-TB environments.
  • Evaluate and recommend cloud database services and emerging technologies, providing build-vs-buy analysis and proof-of-concept implementations.
  • Mentor and guide database engineers and developers, elevating data platform knowledge across the organization.
  • Partner with development teams on complex schema design, API data patterns, and data warehouse modeling.
  • Oversee data migration and upgrade projects, including major version upgrades and cloud lift-and-shift initiatives.
  • Drive automation of operational processes including monitoring, alerting, backup validation, and routine maintenance using PowerShell, Python, or similar.
  • Provide escalation support for critical production incidents and participate in 24x7 on-call rotation.
  • Produce architectural documentation, including solution design documents, runbooks, and data flow diagrams.
