Job description

Senior Platform Architect

Job number: 877

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet peopleโ€™s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. Weโ€™ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, weโ€™re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We arenโ€™t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

As a Senior Platform Architect, you will serve as the lead technical authority responsible for defining, maintaining, and evolving the architecture of a large federal enterprise cloud platform and its associated services. You will provide strategic architectural guidance to ensure scalability, interoperability, performance, security, and alignment with Government technical objectives and enterprise architecture standards, coordinating closely with program leadership, engineering teams, and Government technical leadership. Primary expectations of a Senior Platform Architect include:

  • Developing, maintaining, and governing the platform and system architecture
  • Overseeing system design, integration patterns, and architectural standards
  • Evaluating and recommending architectural approaches that support scalability, performance, and reliability
  • Coordinating architecture reviews for new capabilities, system enhancements, and major platform changes
  • Aligning system architecture with Government enterprise architecture policies and technical standards
  • Overseeing system interoperability, data exchange patterns, and integration with external systems and services
  • Identifying and mitigating architectural risks affecting performance, scalability, or maintainability
  • Coordinating with development, maintenance, and operations teams to ensure architectural consistency across platform components
  • Providing strategic architectural guidance and mentorship to architects and engineers
  • Ensuring architectural decisions and system designs are documented, reviewed, and implemented in accordance with approved technical standards, security requirements, and mission objectives
  • Coordinating with program leadership, technical directors, DevSecOps personnel, and Government technical leadership, including regular communication with the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) on architectural decisions and technical roadmap planning
  • Maintaining availability during core business hours and responsiveness to urgent issues as needed to support mission needs
  • Managing hiring, performance management, timecard reviews, PTO, and team development

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's and 10+ years of engineering experience; relevant experience may be substituted for education
  • Demonstrated experience designing and governing architecture for complex enterprise platforms and mission-critical systems in a SAFe environment
  • Experience supporting Federal Government programs and enterprise-scale applications operating in cloud-based or hybrid environments
  • Expertise in modern system architecture practices, including microservices, containerized environments, and cloud-native platforms
  • Experience leading large teams and understanding the interactions between people, systems, and processes
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust / suitability determination

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Experience aligning architecture with Federal enterprise architecture standards and security frameworks (e.g., NIST 800-53, zero-trust)
  • Experience with AWS and Kubernetes-based (Amazon EKS) cloud-native architectures
  • Relevant architecture or cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect Professional, TOGAF)
