Position Summary:
Under the direction of a Registered Pharmacist, the Lead Medication Historian Pharmacy Tech assists Pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Assists Pharmacist in coordination of technician activities for a shift, or a functional area within the pharmacy. Assists Manager in training, competency validation, coaching of staff for adherence to standard work, maintenance of key records and is a content expert for the primary area of assignment. Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors and staff.
What you'll do:
  • Prepares, packages, and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to effective and quality operation of the department.
  • Maintains logs, records, and other required files and documentation; answers telephone and pneumatic tube; and handles cash transactions.
  • Prepares IV admixtures and other sterile products.
  • Processes medication charges and credits according to established policy.
  • Performs basic pharmacy computer order entry.
  • Trains and provides competency validation of Technician II, III, and IV roles.
  • Collaborates with Manager and designated pharmacists to provide content expertise and staff coaching in at least one of the following core pharmacy process areas; 1) Sterile Non-Hazardous Admixture, 2) Sterile Hazardous Admixture, 3) Unit Dose and Pyxis Distribution Services, 4) Second, third shift and weekend operations, 5) Pharmacy Informatics
  • Participate in the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of pharmacy students and/or residents as assigned. Pharmacy Informatics Lead will have education and training responsibilities for Pharmacy Technology with nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with Manager to develop records, reports, training modules, competency validation methods, and systems to demonstrate compliance with applicable regulatory and legal requirements for their assigned primary area of expertise.
  • Collaborates with Manager for formal annual assessments of team members who work in their assigned lead areas.
  • Pharmacy Informatics Lead Only: Provides technology and database management for various Pharmacy Technologies including Pyxis ES, Isensix Temperature Monitoring system, Swisslog Automated Packaging System, Smart IV Pumps, TPN compounder, Pharmacy printing solutions and advanced skills in Hospital/ Pharmacy Information System.

What you'll need:
  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Certified and licensed as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) in the State of Michigan.
  • Three years of pharmacy work experience.
  • Preferred: Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician training program; or two years of college with emphasis in math, science, or medical field applications. Completion of Mercy Health leader training for front line leaders.
  • Preferred: Experience in Pharmacy or MHSM continuous improvement or Kata teams.
