As of Jul 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for pet claims in the United States is $64,609.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $51,000.00 and $75,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are pet claims?

Pet claims refer to requests for reimbursement or payment made to a pet insurance company for veterinary expenses incurred due to a pet's illness, injury, or routine care. When your pet receives medical treatment covered by your insurance policy, you can submit a claim to your insurer along with relevant documentation, such as invoices and medical records. The insurance company then reviews your claim and, if approved, reimburses you for eligible costs according to your policy's terms. It's important to understand your policy's coverage, exclusions, and claim process to ensure a smooth experience.

What are some common challenges faced by Pet Claims specialists, and how can they be addressed?

Pet Claims specialists often encounter challenges such as deciphering incomplete documentation, verifying policy coverage, and managing emotional conversations with pet owners during stressful times. Staying organized and detail-oriented helps ensure accurate claim assessments, while strong communication skills are key to providing empathetic support. Collaborating closely with veterinary professionals and underwriters also aids in timely and fair claim resolutions, making teamwork and adaptability essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pet Claims Adjuster, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pet Claims Adjuster, you need a solid understanding of insurance policies, animal health terminology, and claims processing, typically supported by experience in insurance or veterinary fields. Familiarity with claims management systems, insurance software, and sometimes certification such as AIC (Associate in Claims) is valuable. Excellent attention to detail, empathy, and strong communication skills are essential to effectively assess claims and support pet owners. These skills ensure accurate claim evaluations, regulatory compliance, and compassionate service, which are critical for customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

  • Review documentation, verify coverage, and assess liability accurately
  • Set appropriate reserves and manage claims within your authority
  • Identify potential fraud indicators and escalate appropriately
  • Maintain accurate and thorough claims records for audit and compliance

  • Experience leading, mentoring, or coaching others is a plus
  • Startup or high-growth experience is a plus
