What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Performance Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Tester, you need a strong understanding of software testing principles, performance metrics, and experience with scripting languages, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, or Gatling, as well as familiarity with CI/CD systems and relevant certifications, is essential. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you identify bottlenecks and clearly convey findings to development teams. These skills ensure the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of applications in real-world environments.

What are some common challenges faced by performance testers during large-scale application testing, and how can they be addressed?

Performance testers often encounter challenges such as simulating realistic user loads, identifying bottlenecks in complex systems, and interpreting large volumes of test data. Addressing these challenges typically involves using advanced performance testing tools, collaborating closely with development and operations teams, and implementing robust monitoring solutions. Clear communication and thorough documentation also help ensure issues are identified and resolved efficiently, leading to more reliable application performance.

What is performance testing?

Performance testing is a type of software testing that evaluates how well an application performs under various conditions, particularly in terms of responsiveness, stability, scalability, and speed. It helps identify bottlenecks, ensure the system can handle expected user loads, and verifies that performance requirements are met. Common types of performance testing include load testing, stress testing, and endurance testing. This process is crucial for delivering reliable applications and a positive user experience.

Is performance testing a good career?

Performance testing is a valuable career in software quality assurance, focusing on evaluating system speed, stability, and scalability using tools like JMeter or LoadRunner. It requires technical skills, understanding of software architecture, and often involves certifications such as ISTQB; demand for performance testers remains steady in industries reliant on reliable software performance.

What is the difference between Performance Testing vs Software Test Engineer?

AspectPerformance TestingSoftware Test Engineer
Primary FocusEvaluating system speed, responsiveness, and stability under loadEnsuring overall software quality through various testing types
Required SkillsPerformance testing tools, scripting, load generationManual and automated testing, test case design, defect tracking
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, performance testing tools, scripting environmentsDevelopment and testing environments, diverse testing tools

Job description

Responsibilities

Join Peraton in advancing the safety, efficiency, and modernization of the National Airspace System (NAS) through the FAA's Brand New Air Traffic Control System (BNATCS) contract. As a trusted partner to the Federal Aviation Administration, Peraton helps deliver the systems and services that keep our nation's skies safe and connected.

We're looking for innovative professionals who thrive in mission-critical environments and are passionate about shaping the future of air traffic management. This is your chance to make an impact on one of the world's most vital transportation infrastructures, working alongside leaders in aviation, engineering, data science, and systems integration.

At Peraton, you won't just support the mission - you'll define it.

Join a team dedicated to protecting the safety and integrity of U.S. air travel. Peraton is seeking a Performance & Stability Test Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. The ideal candidate will lead performance, scalability, and reliability testing oversight, ensuring that deployed systems meet FAA operational demands and maintain high availability under load. This role offers the opportunity to directly influence the quality and resilience of critical aviation systems that millions of passengers and airline operators rely on every day. Whether you're supporting safety validation efforts or leading teams on major FAA programs, your work will directly impact the millions of passengers and aviation professionals who rely on safe, efficient airspace operations every day.

Location: This position will be on-site located in Chantilly, VA.

In this position, you will:

  • Lead the design, development, and execution of performance and stability testing for the end-to-end system across realistic operational scenarios
  • Define and maintain comprehensive Performance and Stability Test Plans and Procedures, with a strong emphasis on test automation, repeatability, and scalability
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize large-scale scenario and workload definitions, using AI-assisted tools where appropriate to improve coverage, realism, and efficiency
  • Perform in-depth system log analysis, telemetry review, and data correlation to identify performance bottlenecks, stability risks, and latent defects
  • Use Data Reduction & Analysis (DR&A) and diagnostic tools to efficiently capture, analyze, and baseline system state during test execution
  • Write high-quality PTRs with clear reproduction steps, supporting data, log evidence, and impact analysis
  • Track, analyze, and report test metrics (throughput, latency, resource use, error rates, endurance trends) to assess system health and test progress
  • Collaborate closely with Software Engineering teams to reproduce defects, validate fixes, and perform regression testing on PTR resolutions

Why This Role Matters:

The FAA's systems operate at a scale and complexity unlike any other. Downtime or degraded performance can disrupt national air travel, compromise safety, and impact commerce on a massive scale. Your work will directly safeguard the reliability of the nation's airspace systems, supporting the FAA's mission to provide safe, efficient, and predictable air traffic management.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
  • Must have the ability to obtain / maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of experience or Masters degree and 10 years or Associate's degree and 14 years experience or HS diploma/equivalent and 16 years experience.
  • Proven experience in performance, load, and stability testing for complex enterprise or mission-critical systems using Linux, XML, JSON and Playwright.
  • Strong knowledge of system architecture, distributed systems, and network protocols.
  • Experience analyzing metrics, logs, and traces to diagnose performance issues.
  • Ability to translate operational demands into performance test scenarios.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to FAA programs or NAS systems.
  • Locust load testing framework.
  • Experience with FAA systems, federal modernization programs, or critical infrastructure environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerized environments (Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Knowledge of FAA operational standards and performance requirements.
  • Certifications such as ISTQB Performance Testing, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or similar.
  • Background in continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines with integrated performance testing.
