Job description
The Performance Consultant assists with the implementation of OHSU's Strategic and Organizational Performance Improvement Plans and Quality Plan through project work, facilitation, consultation, coaching, education and reporting. Functions as a change agent utilizing performance improvement methodologies in vital improvement initiatives that reduce operational and clinical risk and improve efficiency and effectiveness in operations and clinical activities related to the healthcare system identified by OHSU Leadership. These performance initiatives may extend beyond hospitals and clinics to university-wide initiatives.
Function/Duties of Position- Facilitation/Project Management. Designs and leads improvement initiatives commissioned by OHSU Leadership using performance improvement methodologies. Manages Performance Improvement projects and facilitates Kaizen events. Drives improvements to positively achieve key performance improvement indicators relative to safety, quality, cost, productivity, and throughput. Promotes and models change management tools and approaches. Establishes plans and procedures including standard work and implements daily management systems to assure that improvements are realized and sustained.
- Consultation/Coaching. Serves as an expert consultant and advisor in performance improvement methodologies. Assists departments and other staff in the organization in the use of project management, performance improvement, and change management tools and expertise. Determines the appropriate improvement model to use for identified performance improvement projects. Helps build internal capability by coaching others to conduct their own assessments and improvement events. Recommends specific monitoring activities and daily management to assure improvement sustainability and control. As needed, serves as expert advisor and trainer in specific performance improvement software tools.
- Education & Training. Provides Performance Improvement training to OHSU employees and teams and team members (colleagues) in classroom and virtual settings, within meetings/workshops, and 1:1/small groups. Helps drive the development of internal capability. Identifies specific needs for self-development and implements plans to achieve professional growth to remain expert in the concepts and processes of quality and performance improvement. Attends, participates, and leads professional meetings and committees; remains current in new trends and innovations.
- Reporting. Prepares and presents reports and presentations for teams, leadership, committees, and UHS Board.
- Internal Improvement. Embedded within all of the above responsibilities. Engage and lead improvement of internal processes and systems.
- Bachelor's degree in healthcare, science, business, engineering, or statistics. Evidence of relevant continuing education in the area of performance improvement and project management.
- 5 years of experience in performance improvement.
- Demonstrate through either previous position responsibilities or academic preparation: Strong training skills and facilitation abilities with evidence of successful lean six sigma projects
- Evidence within last 2 years of Project Management skills working with teams requiring self-direction and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence within the last two years of projects showing evidence of detail oriented and superb organizational skills
- Ability to work as a team member
- Expertise in office automation computer software including word processing, PowerPoint, spreadsheet, flow diagram and statistical programs.
- Basic understanding of statistical and data analysis.
- Certification is required. Detps will determine which one i.e. Sigma Certification, Lean Certification etc
- Master's degree preferred.
- 2 years in a healthcare setting preferred. Previous work as a Project Manager/Performance Improvement Consultant and formal experience in training and coaching preferred.
- Six Sigma Master Black Belt or other Training/Coaching certification. Change Management certification .
- Normal office environment. Generally follows M-F 0800-1700 workweek with variability depending on clinical Department and project needs.Ability to work hybrid; in the office 2-3 days a week and work from home 2-3 days per week.
- Extensive computer use. Frequent walking between buildings and to remote locations when on campus.
