What is a per diem social worker?

A Per Diem Social Worker is a social work professional who works on an as-needed or on-call basis, rather than having a regular, full-time schedule. These professionals may fill in for absent staff, handle increased workloads, or provide coverage during busy periods. Per diem roles offer flexibility but may not provide the same benefits or job security as permanent positions. They are common in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare or social service settings where staffing needs can change frequently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem social worker?

To thrive as a Per Diem Social Worker, you need a degree in social work (BSW or MSW), applicable licensure (such as LCSW or LMSW), and a strong understanding of assessment and case management. Familiarity with electronic case management systems, documentation standards, and sometimes crisis intervention tools is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, adaptability, and cultural competence help you excel in diverse and often fast-changing environments. These qualifications ensure effective support for clients while maintaining compliance and quality care across varying settings.

How does the flexibility of a per diem social work position impact daily responsibilities and team collaboration?

Per diem social work roles offer significant schedule flexibility, which can be highly attractive but also requires adaptability. Because per diem social workers are often called in to cover staff shortages or increased caseloads, daily responsibilities can vary widely—from conducting assessments to providing crisis intervention or discharge planning. While you may not have a fixed caseload, you will frequently collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including nurses, physicians, and case managers, to ensure continuity of care for clients. Building rapport quickly and staying up-to-date on each facility’s protocols are key to effective teamwork and client outcomes.
