What is a per diem SLP?

Per Diem SLPs are speech-language pathologists who work on an as-needed basis, rather than holding a full-time or part-time permanent position. They may fill in for staff absences, help with increased caseloads, or provide services in various settings such as hospitals, schools, or rehabilitation centers. This role offers flexibility, allowing SLPs to choose their assignments and schedules, but hours and benefits may vary depending on the employer and demand.

How does a typical workweek look for a per diem SLP, and how flexible is the scheduling?

Per Diem Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) often have highly flexible schedules, as they are typically called upon to cover staff shortages, increased caseloads, or specific patient needs. Their workweek may vary greatly, with assignments sometimes scheduled in advance and other times offered on short notice. Per Diem SLPs may work in different settings, such as hospitals, schools, or rehabilitation centers, and must adapt quickly to new teams and environments. This flexibility allows for work-life balance but also requires strong organizational skills and adaptability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem speech-language pathologist (SLP), and why are they important?

To excel as a Per Diem SLP, you need a master's degree in speech-language pathology, a state license, and often a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from ASHA. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR), standardized assessment tools, and augmentative communication systems is typically required. Flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and effective time management help SLPs adapt to varied caseloads and build rapport with patients and teams. These competencies ensure high-quality, patient-centered care and seamless integration into diverse healthcare environments.
