What is a per diem psychologist?

A per diem psychologist is a licensed mental health professional who works on an as-needed or part-time basis rather than a set schedule. They are often hired by hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare facilities to provide psychological services when there is a temporary increase in demand or to cover for regular staff. Per diem psychologists may perform assessments, provide therapy, and consult with other healthcare providers. Their flexible work arrangement allows them to choose assignments that fit their availability. This role is ideal for psychologists seeking variety or supplementary income.

How does a per diem psychologist typically integrate with a full-time clinical team?

Per Diem Psychologists often work on an as-needed basis, filling in for staff shortages or providing coverage during peak demand periods. While they may not be present every day, they collaborate closely with full-time clinicians by sharing client updates, participating in team meetings when possible, and ensuring continuity of care through thorough documentation. This flexible arrangement requires strong communication skills and adaptability to quickly align with the treatment approaches and protocols of the team. Many find that this role offers exposure to diverse cases and settings, facilitating professional growth and networking opportunities.
