Job Summary:
The Per Diem Cook & Kitchen Assistant covers for the regular Cook and supports daily meal operations as needed. This role is essential in preparing and serving nutritious, well-balanced meals that promote the health and well-being of older adults. The Per Diem Cook & Kitchen Assistant ensures all meals meet program standards and comply with Department for the Aging (DFTA) and Department of Mental Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) requirements for nutrition, sanitation, and food safety.
The first three months of employment will consist of consistent training and follow a full-time work schedule to ensure mastery of all responsibilities and operational procedures.
Responsibilities
- Provide coverage for the regular Cook during absences, special events, or high-demand periods.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen and food preparation area at all times.
- Wash and sanitize all cookware, utensils, and serving equipment.
- Receive, check, and properly store food deliveries, monitoring expiration dates and inventory levels.
- Follow all food safety and health regulations, including proper temperature control and hygiene practices.
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to ensure timely meal service and a positive dining environment.
- Report any food shortages, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns to the supervisor immediately.
- Support special events or emergency meal distribution as needed.
Requirements
- Minimum of three years of experience in food service, preferably in a senior center, community kitchen, or institutional setting.
- NYC Food Protection Certificate preferred.
- Ability to follow directions, work independently, and adapt to varying schedules.
- Must be able to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain a positive, professional demeanor with participants and staff.
Essential Physical Job Functions:
- Work is performed in a kitchen environment with exposure to heat, cleaning supplies, and food allergens.
- Must be available to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
