What Is a PCB Designer?

A PCB is a printed circuit board. PCBs support electronic components, such as transistors, diodes, and capacitors. A PCB designer uses computer software programs to design the layout for these printed circuit boards, collaborates with engineers to create 3D models of circuit boards, develops PCB design guidelines, and drafts plans for manufacturers. Printed circuit board designers make it possible for people to use computers, television sets, microwaves, and mobile phones.

What does a PCB designer do?

A PCB designer creates the layout and schematic diagrams for printed circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software to design circuit layouts, ensure proper component placement, and verify electrical connections, often working closely with engineers. Proficiency in CAD tools and understanding of electronic principles are essential for this role.

What are some common challenges PCB Designers face when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

PCB Designers often need to balance the technical requirements from hardware engineers with the practical constraints set by manufacturers. Challenges can include ensuring that complex circuit layouts meet electrical and mechanical specifications, managing tight deadlines, and adapting designs to fit component availability or fabrication limitations. Effective communication and a proactive approach to design reviews are key to resolving these issues and ensuring a smooth transition from design to production. Building strong relationships with both engineers and manufacturers helps streamline the process and reduces the risk of costly redesigns.

Job description

Company Overview:

Second Order Effects started in 2016 as a services firm, taking on other companies' hardest engineering problems from first principles. We grew into a solutions firm that designs and ships complete custom electronics and systems, including power electronics, RF, and control systems. We've completed over 250 projects for more than 100 clients. Our designs control rocket engines, manage satellite communications, instrument fusion reactors, and are enjoyed by consumers around the world.

We approach problems from first principles. We break challenges down to their most fundamental components, which is how we find solutions that hold up across industries, use cases, and engineering functions. We focus on solving the right problems and building the teams to take them on. Because we believe that training and empowering others yields a greater impact than focusing on developing any specific technology, we expect every single member of our team to participate in building up those around them.

In the past year, we've started taking our own concepts and spinning them out into separate companies that we believe will meet the emerging needs of our clients and the industry at large. The work is concentrating in frontier technology, including space, fusion and fission energy, and advanced vehicles. We currently have two spinout companies in stealth that we're working on.
