What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Circuit Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Circuit Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and experience with schematic design, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with EDA tools like Cadence, OrCAD, or Altium Designer, and knowledge of simulation software such as SPICE, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and troubleshoot complex circuits. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, efficient circuit designs that meet industry standards and project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Circuit Design Engineers when working on new product development?

Circuit Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting stringent performance specifications while minimizing power consumption and cost. They must also ensure their designs are manufacturable and meet industry standards for reliability and safety. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, including PCB layout, firmware, and testing engineers, is essential to address integration issues and ensure the final product functions as intended. Staying updated with rapidly evolving technology and component availability is another key aspect of the role.

What does a Circuit Design Engineer do?

A Circuit Design Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and developing electronic circuits that are used in various devices and systems. They work with both analog and digital circuits, ensuring that the components function correctly and efficiently. Their job involves creating schematics, selecting appropriate components, running simulations, and collaborating with other engineers to bring electronic products from concept to reality. Circuit Design Engineers play a key role in industries such as telecommunications, automotive, consumer electronics, and aerospace.

What is the difference between Circuit Design Engineer vs Electronics Engineer?

AspectCircuit Design EngineerElectronics Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing electronic circuits and systemsDesigning, testing, and troubleshooting electronic devices and systems
Skills & CertificationsCircuit simulation, PCB design, CAD tools, often requires electrical engineering degreeElectronics theory, circuit analysis, testing, often requires electrical engineering degree
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D departments, manufacturing facilitiesResearch labs, manufacturing, field testing, product development
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, telecommunications, aerospaceConsumer electronics, industrial equipment, automotive

While both roles involve working with electronic systems, a Circuit Design Engineer primarily focuses on creating and optimizing electronic circuits, whereas an Electronics Engineer has a broader scope, including testing and troubleshooting entire electronic devices. The roles often overlap, especially in design and development phases, but their specific responsibilities differ based on project needs.

What Does a Circuit Design Engineer Do?

A circuit design engineer develops electronic circuitry found in analog devices such as a computer, smartphone, or television. As a circuit design engineer, your job duties include designing the latest advances in circuits, developing circuit equipment, and troubleshooting after installation. You may also supervise the manufacturing process in plants and factories, as well as perform safety and cost assessments.

Job description

We have an outstanding Contract position for a Circuit Design Engineer to join a leading Company located in the Orlando, FL surrounding area.

**US Citizenship is required.**
**Candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.**

As the Senior Circuit Design Engineer, you will own the end-to-end design of the CCA, translating system requirements into reliable, production-ready circuit cards that power, communicate with, and integrate into the launcher's subsystems. You will work hand in hand with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, perform verification and validation, and ensure every design meets rigorous power conditioning, signal integrity, and environmental standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Defining performance, power, and interface requirements for the CCA and documenting them in clear, traceable specifications.
  • Creating schematic capture, PCB layout, and bill of materials (BOM) using industry standard tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence).
  • Conducting simulation, signal integrity, and power analysis studies to validate design choices early in the development cycle.
  • Building and testing prototype hardware in the lab, troubleshooting issues, and iterating designs to meet V&V milestones.
  • Coordinating with mechanical and systems teams to ensure seamless integration with launcher subsystems and compliance with SWaP C constraints.
  • Preparing and delivering technical briefings, design reviews, and status updates for senior engineering, program management, and customers.
  • Managing configuration control, documentation, and change requests in the PLM system to maintain a robust, audit-ready design history.
  • Supporting environmental qualification (vibration, shock, thermal, radiation) and analyzing results to drive design improvements.

Basic Hiring Criteria:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related STEM field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in circuit design engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with circuit card design, integration, and test for one or more of the following: digital electronics, power electronics, analog/mixed-signal, or FPGA-based processor boards.
  • Experience with Siemens Xpedition Enterprise or equivalent for schematic capture.
  • Experience with Cadence PSpice or equivalent for circuit simulation and analysis.
  • Experience with signal integrity tools such as Mentor Graphics Hyperlynx or equivalent.
  • Experience with developing and refining system, performance, interface, and environmental requirements for circuit card designs.
  • Must be a US Citizen; must possess or be able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with MFC circuit card design processes and the Design Assurance process.
  • Experience with military standards and specifications, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-704.
  • Experience with Xilinx/AMD FPGA families (UltraScale, Versal).
  • High-speed design experience, including PCIe, Gigabit Ethernet, SERDES, or DDR4/5 memory interfaces.
  • MATLAB experience for analysis and simulation.
  • Experience with MOSA (Modular Open Systems Architecture) and WOSA (Weapon Open Systems Architecture).
  • Experience with CAMEO or equivalent requirements management tools.
  • Experience with rigid-flex circuit card design.
  • Experience with environmental qualification testing (vibration, shock, thermal, radiation).
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance.

Military connected talent encouraged to apply.
