As of Jun 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for internship pcb designer in the United States is $100,705.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship PCB Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship PCB Designer, you typically need a foundational understanding of electronics, circuit theory, and PCB layout principles, often gained through coursework or a related degree program. Familiarity with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCAD, and basic knowledge of industry standards is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, effective problem-solving, and clear communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for creating reliable, manufacturable circuit boards while collaborating efficiently with engineering teams.

What does an Internship PCB Designer do?

An Internship PCB Designer assists in creating the layout and design of printed circuit boards (PCBs) under the supervision of experienced engineers. Their duties often include using design software to draft PCB schematics, assisting in the prototyping process, and collaborating with hardware teams to ensure proper functionality. Interns also learn about industry standards, manufacturing constraints, and may participate in testing and troubleshooting of PCB designs. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to gain hands-on experience in electronic hardware design.

What is the difference between Internship Pcb Designer vs Pcb Designer?

AspectInternship Pcb DesignerPcb Designer
CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of relevant engineering or design programTypically requires a degree or equivalent experience in electrical or PCB design
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in a corporate or engineering firmFull-time professional environment in electronics or manufacturing companies
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with PCB layout, learning design tools, supporting senior designersCreating PCB layouts, verifying designs, preparing manufacturing files

In summary, an Internship Pcb Designer is a trainee gaining hands-on experience under supervision, while a Pcb Designer is a full-fledged professional responsible for PCB design tasks independently.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB Design Interns, and how can they be overcome?

As a PCB Design Intern, you may encounter challenges such as learning new design software, understanding complex schematics, and working within tight design constraints. It's common to feel overwhelmed at first, but seeking feedback from senior designers and collaborating closely with engineers can help you learn more efficiently. Familiarizing yourself with industry tools like Altium Designer or Eagle, and reviewing previous project files, can also accelerate your learning curve. Open communication and a willingness to ask questions will make your experience smoother and more rewarding.

Job description

PCB DESIGNER (STARSHIP)

The Starship team supports the mission to revolutionize orbital flight and space travel- opening access for humankind to establish new frontiers in space and ultimately become a multi-planetary species. Our team builds some of the most advanced electronics ever flown in space- at a cost and rate previously considered unthinkable in the space industry. Become a part of this fast moving and world class hardware development team, work with super smart and motivated engineers, and achieve truly audacious goals. If you're ready for a challenge and would like to help make our civilization multi-planetary then you've come to the right place!

As a PCB Designer on the Starship team, you'll be responsible for creating the layout for all our in-house board designs. You're not just connecting the dots. Here you'll partner closely with Hardware Development Engineers as they develop their schematics, providing your expertise and recommendations at each design review, and iterating your designs to come up with the best possible solutions. You'll contribute to a variety of design mixes from radio phased arrays to power converters and more.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Determine layer stack-up, perform component package selection, component placement, routing feasibility studies, and signal routing of digital, analog, RF, and power conversion of printed circuit boards (PCB)
  • Perform multilayer PCB layout (20+ layers), including component placement, high-speed routing (differential pairs, length matching), controlled impedance, and power/ground plane design
  • Conduct pre- and post-layout SI/PI simulations to mitigate crosstalk, reflections, and EMI/EMC issues
  • Perform DRC/ERC checks, peer reviews, and design audits; collaborate with hardware/firmware engineers for functional validation and prototype bring-up support
  • Produce fabrication deliverables (Gerber, ODB++, IPC-2581, drill files, stack-up drawings, assembly files)
  • Analyze designs for manufacturability; incorporate production feedback from fabrication houses and assembly partners to reduce costs and improve yield
  • Collaborate with internal teams and PCB vendors to continually improve design rules, constraints and design for test and manufacture guidelines
  • Customize and verify symbols, footprints, and 3D models; interface with PCB librarians for new parts and resolve library discrepancies
  • Work with mechanical, thermal, RF, and test engineers on stack-up planning, thermal vias, shielding, and enclosure integration; participate in design reviews and risk assessments
  • Assist our librarians in creating, updating, and maintaining accurate PCB component libraries including symbols, footprints, 3D STEP models, and parametric data in CAD tools like Altium and Xpedition
  • Drive the future roadmap for SpaceX to incorporate custom AI tools to radically improve the efficiency of PCB design tasks

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering OR 3+ years of professional experience with PCB layout in lieu of a degree (internships and club/project work applies)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 2+ years of experience with PCB layout and routing in one or all of the following areas: modern passive and active electronics components, surface-mount, RF components, ball-grid array and similar fine pitch, or high pin density components
  • 1+ years of experience with ECAD libraries and library configuration management
  • Demonstrated understanding of design for manufacturability, assembly, and test
  • Experience with Mentor Xpedition and/or Altium Designer (Mentor Xpedition preferred)
  • Experience with layout of mixed analog and digital designs, high speed buses, FPGA, DRAM and CPU designs, power supplies, DC-DC converters, transmission lines, impedance-controlled traces and power traces
  • Proficiency in generating fabrication outputs (Gerber, ODB++, IPC-2581, drill files), DFM/DFA analysis, constraint-driven design, and collaboration with libraries (symbols, footprints, 3D models)
  • Ability to visualize component placement and interconnectivity
  • Proficiency in Python, Altium/Mentor Xpedition scripting, or similar for automating library tasks, data extraction, and validation
  • Demonstrated cross functional project management skills and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplines
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
PCB Designer /Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year
PCB Designer /Level II: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00/per year
