What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PC-DMIS Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PC-DMIS Programmer, you need a solid understanding of metrology, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and experience in quality control, often supported by a background in mechanical engineering or manufacturing. Proficiency with PC-DMIS software, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and knowledge of CAD systems are typically required, with some employers preferring certifications in CMM programming or quality management. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you interpret complex drawings and collaborate with engineering teams. These skills ensure accurate inspection processes, maintain product quality, and support efficient manufacturing operations.

What are some common challenges faced by PC-DMIS operators when working with complex parts, and how can they be addressed?

PC-DMIS operators often encounter challenges when programming and measuring complex or highly-toleranced parts, especially when interpreting intricate CAD models. Accurate fixture setup and understanding the software's advanced features are crucial to avoid errors. Collaborating closely with engineers and quality teams can help clarify specifications, while ongoing training in both PC-DMIS updates and best practices ensures operators maintain precision and efficiency. Proactively troubleshooting measurement discrepancies and documenting processes also help streamline future inspections.

What is PC-DMIS?

PC-DMIS is a popular software application used to program and operate coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) for dimensional inspection and quality control in manufacturing. It allows users to create measurement routines, analyze part data, and generate inspection reports. PC-DMIS supports a variety of measurement devices, including tactile and non-contact systems, and is widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and precision engineering. The software helps improve accuracy and efficiency in the inspection process, ensuring parts meet design specifications.

Job description

Are you the person everyone trusts when tolerances get tight?

At RGC, our mission is simple: ship parts that meet customer, company (RGC), and industry specifications—without exception. On second shift, you’ll be the hands-on authority who turns complex prints into actionable measurement plans, keeps our calibration system airtight, and partners with production, engineering, and suppliers to elevate quality every day.

Imagine this

You kick off the evening by approving a first piece, programming a CNC CMM in PC-DMIS, and confirming critical features with a Hofler gear inspection machine. Mid-shift, you catch a nonconformance during in-process checks, quarantine the lot, and collaborate on corrective actions. Before the night wraps, you close a PPAP/ISIR package, complete final inspection for shipments, and log calibration updates—documentation organized, data verified, customers protected.

Your week might include
  • Performing first piece, in-process, and final inspections
  • Inspecting incoming vendor materials and certifying outgoing customer shipments
  • Reading/decoding blueprints, customer specifications, and control plans
  • Using precision tools: ID/OD micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, CMMs, Hofler gear inspection machine, tooth verniers
  • Programming/operating manual and CNC CMMs (PC-DMIS / Modus preferred)
  • Executing and maintaining calibration activities
  • Identifying/rejecting nonconforming materials; supporting corrective actions
  • Coaching production teammates on proper measurement methods
  • Supporting PPAP/ISIR, process capability studies, and first article activities
  • Organizing quality documentation and customer files
  • Participating in internal audits and supplier quality engagements
Who thrives here
  • 2–4 years of experience in manufacturing and/or quality assurance
  • Strong blueprint reading and precision metrology skills
  • Comfort with math and geometry
  • Calibration experience (required)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience with bevel gear manufacturing (preferred)
Work Environment
  • Production floor and CNC machining environment; second shift
Rewards & Growth
  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience
  • Growth opportunities in a quality-driven manufacturing organization
Benefits
  • Health insurance
  • Dental and Vision
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off and Holidays
Proficiencies you’ll leverage
  • GD&T
  • Quality Inspection Experience
  • Statistical process control (SPC)
  • Quality Control Experience
  • Tape Measure Reading
  • Advanced Inspection & Gauge Measurement
  • Quality Control Data Analysis
  • PPAP Process Experience
  • Blueprint Reading
Tools & platforms
  • Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) (Mitutoyo, Hexagon)
  • Measurement Gauges
  • Calipers and Micrometers
  • Quality Control Software (PC-DMIS)
