Job description

*This role is being filled directly. We do not accept unsolicited outreach from staffing agencies or third-party recruiters. Applications and referrals submitted by third-party recruiters will not be accepted, reviewed, or eligible for placement fees.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Quality Engineer with deep expertise in gear metrology and CMM-based inspection to join our precision aerospace manufacturing team. This role owns dimensional and geometric quality of gear components produced on Mazak CNC multi-tasking platforms, from in-process checks on the production floor through final CMM verification and First Article Inspection (FAI). Experience with Hexagon CMM hardware and Quindos metrology software for gearing is strongly preferred. You will work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Programs to ensure every part leaves conforming to drawing and AGMA specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program and operate CMM equipment, preferably Hexagon platforms using Quindos, to inspect involute gears, splines, and related features; PC-DMIS or Calypso experience also considered
  • Develop and maintain in-process inspection plans and control plans for gear operations and use of gear data performed on Mazak CNC multi-tasking machines (turning, milling, gear cutting)
  • Evaluate gear geometry parameters — lead, profile, pitch, runout, tooth thickness, and surface finish (Ra/Rz), against engineering and AGMA tolerances
  • Partner with Mazak machine operators and setup technicians to identify in-process quality signals and prevent non-conformances at the source
  • Lead First Article Inspection (FAI) activities per AS9102 for new gear programs and engineering changes
  • Drive nonconformance (NCR), MRB disposition, and CAPA processes using 8D, 5-Why, and Fishbone root-cause methods
  • Perform and interpret Gage R&R / MSA for functional gauges, hard gauges, and CMM routines used in gear inspection
  • Apply SPC and process capability analysis (Cpk) to CNC gear manufacturing processes; lead improvement initiatives to reduce scrap and rework
  • Ensure compliance with AS9100 and ISO 9001 QMS; support internal, customer, and third-party audits
  • Interface directly with customers on quality issues, waivers, deviations, and corrective action closure
  • Train operators and inspectors on in-process gear inspection techniques and quality standards

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 3+ years of quality engineering experience in aerospace, defense, or precision gear manufacturing
  • Hands-on CMM programming and operation, preferably with Hexagon equipment and Quindos; PC-DMIS or Calypso also considered
  • Demonstrated knowledge of gear geometry inspection: involute profile, lead, pitch, runout, spline measurement
  • Proficiency reading GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and gear engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of AS9100 / ISO 9001 QMS requirements
  • Experience with NCR, MRB, and structured CAPA (8D, 5-Why)
  • Familiarity with AGMA gear accuracy standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reading and interpreting Mazatrol CNC programs and setup sheets to support in-process quality verification
  • Experience with dedicated gear metrology equipment (Gleason, Klingelnberg, Zeiss gear checkers) in addition to Hexagon/Quindos
  • Familiarity with gear manufacturing processes: hobbing, shaping, grinding, shaving, lapping
  • ASQ CQE, CQA, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or AS9100 internal auditor certification
  • FAI experience per AS9102; PFMEA, Control Plans, APQP deliverables
  • Knowledge of special processes: heat treat, shot peen, NDT (MT, PT, UT), coating/plating as applied to gears
  • Supplier quality experience including SCAR management and incoming inspection
  • ERP/MES and electronic QMS (eQMS) tool experience
  • Surface finish measurement experience (profilometer, Ra/Rz evaluation)

Why Join Us?

  • Work in a high-quality, aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Opportunity to impact product quality, compliance, and customer satisfaction
  • Collaborative team focused on continuous improvement and operational excellence
  • Career growth and professional development opportunities
  • Comprehensive medical, dental & vision
  • Paid vacation and sick time
