General Position Summary:
The Senior Payroll Specialist's primary responsibility is to ensure data accuracy in relation to payroll processing. This position will serve as a resource for multiple companies within the Radius Recycling umbrella and should demonstrate proficiency in timeliness, communication and building positive inter-department relationships. They should promote process enhancement and best practices in a team environment.
This position offers competitive pay along with a variety of benefits including medical, dental and vision plans for both you and your dependents; 401k with company match, paid time off which starts with your first check, and paid holidays.
Hybrid Working: Enjoy the best of both worlds; collaborate at our Portland, Oregon headquarters three days a week and work from home two days. Arrangements may be subject to change based on business needs.
Compensation Range: $30.00 - $33.00 per hour
Essential Functions:
Administer weekly and bi-weekly payroll processing through UKG systems while retrieving and validating timeclock data from Kronos to ensure general accuracy.
  • Conduct comprehensive payroll audits prior to transmission to guarantee accuracy and generate necessary reports and data following processing completion.
  • Process manual checks when required in accordance with state wage and hour regulations and compliance standards.
  • Develop thorough understanding of union contract provisions as they relate to payroll operations and maintain current knowledge of US pay policy regulations.
  • Execute employee lifecycle changes including new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, and status modifications with precision and attention to detail.
  • Investigate and resolve payroll-related inquiries while providing excellent customer service to employees and management.
  • Collaborate with Management on compliance matters and escalate issues appropriately when they arise.
  • Partner closely with HR Business Partners and field management to address and resolve payroll-related concerns efficiently.
  • Stay informed about changes in tax and deduction laws that impact payroll processing procedures.
  • Manage high-volume workloads effectively while consistently meeting critical payroll transmission deadlines.
  • Utilize intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel and Word, to support daily operations.
  • Support special projects and additional assignments as directed by management.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Minimum 5 years of payroll processing experience preferably with a population of 500+.
  • Multi-State payroll experience, national preferred but not required.
  • Experience processing payroll with a large payroll provider; UKG experience preferred but not required.
  • Canadian payroll processing preferred but not required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly with team members, management, employees and external individuals and agencies in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Strong work ethic, demonstrating integrity and trust as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • The flexibility to accept and adapt to change as well as the commitment to seek continuous improvement.

Interpersonal Contacts:
This role requires multi-channel communication across all organizational levels, from entry-level staff to executive leadership, through telephone, written correspondence, and in-person interactions. Responsibilities include addressing routine inquiries as well as complex discussions regarding company policies and procedures. External communication encompasses diverse stakeholders including prospective candidates, government regulatory agencies, legal counsel, consultants, and fellow HR professionals through various communication channels.
Job Conditions:
This position operates in a hybrid work environment, currently three days per week at the company's corporate headquarters in Portland, Oregon and two days remotely, subject to change based on business needs. The role requires the ability to manage competing priorities, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and maintain focus in a busy office setting.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:
Ability to: Sit for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; write by hand and/or keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; bend at waist, twist upper body, stand, walk, and negotiate uneven surfaces; assemble papers, staple, and file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers. Ability to: communicate both by phone and in person in a professional manner. Visual acuity needed for close detail work. Adaptability to change within a growing organization.
