What is a pastoral internship?

A pastoral internship is a structured program designed to provide hands-on experience and training for individuals preparing for pastoral ministry. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced pastors, participating in activities such as preaching, teaching, counseling, and community outreach. The goal is to help interns develop practical ministry skills, deepen their theological understanding, and discern their calling. Pastoral internships can vary in length and are often a requirement for seminary students or those seeking ordination.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pastoral intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pastoral Intern, you need a grounding in theological studies, biblical knowledge, and a sincere commitment to spiritual leadership, often supported by enrollment in or completion of seminary or ministry training programs. Familiarity with church management software, communication tools, and basic event coordination systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to listen and communicate effectively help you connect with congregants and support church activities. These skills ensure you can provide meaningful spiritual guidance and effectively assist in the diverse responsibilities of church ministry.

What types of mentorship and feedback can I expect during a pastoral internship?

As a Pastoral Intern, you can typically expect to receive guidance and mentorship from experienced pastoral staff, often through regular one-on-one meetings and collaborative ministry projects. Feedback is usually provided both informally—through on-the-job coaching—and formally, via scheduled evaluations that help you reflect on your personal and professional growth. Many internships also encourage participation in team meetings and offer opportunities to lead small groups or portions of worship services, all under the supervision of a mentor. This supportive environment is designed to help you develop practical ministry skills while building strong relationships within the church community.

Job description

Join Our Team at Christ Church!

At Christ Church, every role matters because every team member matters. When you join our staff, you’re not just accepting a position; you’re stepping into a calling where your work directly impacts the next generation of leaders and our mission of “Uniting People to God and People to People.”

We’re looking for the new Director, College Ministry & Internships - a visionary, relational, and purpose-driven leader with a passion for reaching college students, cultivating emerging leaders, and building meaningful pathways for discipleship and service. If you love mentoring young adults, forming dynamic partnerships, coordinating impactful experiences, and shaping the next generation, this is your opportunity to influence lives and strengthen the Church for years to come.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

As the Director of the College Ministry & Internships, you’ll be at the center of Christ Church’s efforts to reach, disciple, and empower college-aged students and interns across all campuses. Your work goes far beyond running programs.  You’ll be building community, developing leaders, and creating spaces where young adults experience belonging, purpose, and spiritual growth.

This role is active, relational, and full of momentum. You’ll lead outreach on local campuses, oversee a thriving church-wide internship program, coordinate transportation and events that draw students into community, and ensure that every young adult who walks through our doors is welcomed, discipled, and cared for. Along the way, you’ll mobilize volunteers, shape systems, and collaborate across departments to create a seamless, healthy, and high-impact ministry.

Here, your leadership doesn’t just run programs - it multiplies discipleship and expands Kingdom impact.

  • You’ll guide students in discovering their identity in Christ and living it out confidently.
  • You’ll work with a supportive, innovative, and spiritually grounded team.
  • You’ll help build a ministry that is vibrant, relational, and mission-focused.

What You’ll Do

As the Director, College Ministry & Internships, you will lead five core program areas that shape the heart of this ministry: College Partnerships & Outreach, Internship Program Management, the Right @ Home Program, Transportation Oversight, and Discipleship & Pastoral Care. These areas form the foundation of your work — guiding how you build relationships, develop leaders, create meaningful experiences, and support the spiritual growth of students and interns across Christ Church. These core areas come to life through the practical, relational, and strategic work you’ll lead — and the responsibilities below outline how you will turn vision into impact.

·      Cultivate dynamic college partnerships:  Build strong relationships with colleges and universities, showing up on campuses, hosting outreach events, and collaborating cross-functionally to boost visibility and recruit students and interns into a thriving Christ-centered community.

·      Lead a high-impact Internship Program:  Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, mentoring, and evaluation. You’ll design clear systems and partner with other departments to ensure interns gain real ministry experience

·      Champion the Right @ Home Program:  Recruit host families, match students with care, and manage all logistics to create a welcoming, meaningful holiday experience for students far from home.

·      Ensure smooth and safe transportation:  Manage shuttle routes, schedules, communication, and drivers so students can reliably access Christ Church. You’ll adjust services as needed and maintain all safety and liability standards.

·      Lead discipleship and pastoral care environments:  Create spaces where students and interns grow through prayer, teaching, mentorship, and community. You’ll walk alongside young adults as they explore faith and purpose and help build out the Quest College Program.

·      Cross-Functional Responsibilities: Strengthen the systems that power ministry by managing workflows, data, budgets, and policies with excellence. Partner across departments to support church-wide events and ensure every area is aligned, efficient, and positioned for growth.

Why This Role Matters

College students and interns represent a powerful, emerging generation with the potential to shape the future of the Church and community. Your leadership will give them a place to belong, opportunities to serve, and the guidance needed to grow into confident, Christ-centered leaders.

Through outreach, discipleship, mentorship, and development, your work will influence students at one of the most pivotal seasons of their lives — and the impact will echo for years to come.

What We’re Looking For

A visionary leader who loves Jesus, values students, and thrives in a fast-paced, relational, and collaborative ministry environment. You are a strategic builder, a skilled connector, and a caring shepherd — someone who brings strong organizational ability, clear communication, and the capacity to inspire others toward meaningful ministry impact.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s in Ministry/Theology, Higher Education, or Nonprofit Leadership a plus)
  • At least 5 years of experience in event planning, program management, ministry leadership, or young adult engagement
  • Experience working with young adults and senior leaders

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Initiative & Problem-Solving: You’re a strong self-starter who takes initiative, thinks strategically, and solves problems with maturity and insight.
  • Multitasking & Attention to Detail: You can manage multiple projects at once while maintaining accuracy, focus, and excellence in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organization & Communication: You bring exceptional organizational skills along with clear interpersonal, written, and proofreading abilities.
  • Collaboration: You work well across departments and enjoy partnering with internal teams and external organizations to move ministry forward.
  • Service Orientation: You provide excellent customer service and communicate with clarity, care, and professionalism.
  • Technical Proficiency: You’re proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and confident in conducting online research.
  • Digital & Social Engagement: You understand social media, networking platforms, and online tools that effectively engage youth and college students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading college ministry or multi-campus student initiatives
  • Success in building partnerships with universities or para-church ministries
  • Experience managing internship programs, retreats, or missions
  • Cross-cultural or bilingual ministry experience

What We Offer

We believe serving God and others should be both meaningful and rewarding. That’s why we offer:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 403(b) retirement plan with company match
  • Company-paid life and accidental insurance
  • Generous paid time off to rest and recharge
  • A supportive, faith-filled team environment
  • Fringe benefits that make life a little easier
