Part-time remote GIS professionals often encounter challenges such as limited access to high-performance computing resources, coordinating with team members across different time zones, and ensuring data security when working with sensitive geospatial information. To address these issues, many organizations provide secure VPN access, cloud-based GIS platforms, and regular virtual meetings for collaboration. Additionally, effective communication and clear project documentation help remote GIS professionals stay aligned with their teams and project goals.

Job description

As a GIS Analyst at Stantec, you’ll play a key role in delivering geospatial services and solutions to both internal project teams and external clients. Your work will primarily support projects in the Mining, Hydropower & Dams, Power Delivery, and Oil & Gas sectors. You’ll collaborate closely with stakeholders to understand their objectives and recommend the most effective GIS technologies and strategies to meet their business needs, bringing spatial insight to complex challenges.

Opportunity:

We’re offering a dynamic full-time opportunity within our Energy & Resources business unit at Stantec, open to candidates-based U.S. While the role is location-flexible—with options for in-office, hybrid, or fully remote arrangements—preference may be given to applicants near one of our key target U.S. hub offices:

  • United States: Salt Lake City, UT; Fort Collins, CO; Denver, CO; Phoenix, AZ; Chicago, IL; Houston, TX

You’ll be joining a vibrant, collaborative team of 12 GIS professionals supporting high-impact projects across North America and beyond. We’re looking for an intermediate, well-rounded, driven GIS Analyst with strong experience in desktop GIS (ArcGIS Pro), ArcGIS Online, and mobile GIS platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to design and implement geospatial strategies that align with client goals—accurately scoping effort and delivering high-quality results from concept to completion
  • Serve as the lead GIS professional on small to mid-sized projects, managing scope, schedule, budget, and with potential to coordinate supporting GIS resources
  • Be an active participant and technical contributor on large, multi-year projects
  • Approach every task as an opportunity to innovate—rethinking how spatial data is collected, managed, visualized, and shared
  • Create clear, compelling cartographic products—both static and interactive (web)—with a strong sense of visual design and storytelling
  • Develop and manage dynamic GIS solutions using Esri products and applications such as Dashboards, Experience Builder, Hub Sites, StoryMaps, Field Maps, and Survey123.
  • Balance creative problem-solving with adherence to Stantec’s GIS standards and best practices
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to GIS team members across experience levels, fostering growth and collaboration regardless of staff seniority
  • Maintain a strong commitment to quality assurance, ensuring accuracy and consistency in all deliverables
  • Stay actively engaged with the GIS team and broader geospatial community, keeping pace with emerging technologies, tools, and industry trends
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changes in project scope, timelines, and budget—including occasional non-traditional work hours
  • Uphold a high standard of personal and team safety in all work environments
