Our mission is to connect experienced professionals with organizations executing complex projects and critical infrastructure initiatives.

Position Overview

Augment Professional Services (APS) is seeking experienced Field Relay Testing & Commissioning Technicians to support the testing, commissioning, startup, and energization of industrial electrical systems for large-scale infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, and data center construction projects, including Tesla facilities.

This position is responsible for commissioning electrical power distribution equipment, performing protective relay testing, validating system functionality, and ensuring electrical systems are safely prepared for energization. Technicians work closely with commissioning engineers, electrical contractors, equipment manufacturers, utility representatives, and client project teams throughout construction and startup activities.

The ideal candidate possesses hands-on experience with protective relays, medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, switchgear, transformers, substations, and electrical acceptance testing while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards and commissioning procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform protective relay testing, calibration, and commissioning using SEL Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories relay platforms.
  • Commission low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Test and commission switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, CTs, PTs/VTs, and associated protection equipment.
  • Execute electrical acceptance testing in accordance with project specifications, client requirements, and applicable industry standards.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot SEL relay settings and communications.
  • Support electrical system energization activities and commissioning sequences.
  • Perform functional testing of protection and control systems.
  • Assist with SCADA, communication, and control system verification.
  • Troubleshoot electrical protection, control, and power distribution issues during construction and startup.
  • Review electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, relay logic, wiring diagrams, and commissioning procedures.
  • Document testing results, commissioning reports, punch lists, and turnover packages.
  • Coordinate activities with engineering, construction, utility representatives, and project management teams.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, client safety requirements, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Travel extensively to project sites throughout the United States.
Required Technical Skills
  • Experience testing and commissioning SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories) protective relays.
  • Working knowledge of electrical protection systems and relay coordination.
  • Experience commissioning switchgear, circuit breakers, substations, transformers, and industrial electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of medium- and high-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Experience with electrical testing equipment such as Omicron, Doble, Megger, Vanguard, or equivalent.
  • Ability to read electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection drawings.
  • Understanding of CT/PT testing, breaker timing, insulation resistance testing, and functional verification.
  • Familiarity with SCADA, communications, and protection control systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in field environments.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office and digital commissioning documentation systems.
Preferred Experience / Qualifications
  • 3+ years of field relay testing and electrical commissioning experience.
  • Previous experience supporting Tesla, hyperscale data center, utility, renewable energy, industrial manufacturing, or EPC construction projects.
  • Experience with SEL AcSELerator QuickSet and SEL protective relay families.
  • NETA Testing Technician certification (preferred).
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • NFPA 70E training.
  • Electrical Journeyman License or equivalent field experience preferred.
