Sr Engineer, Substations Relay

Job Description

Forge ahead with WSB. We are seeking a Sr. Engineer, Substation Relay to provide technical leadership in the design, coordination, and implementation of protective relay settings and control schemes for utility substations and renewable energy interconnections across voltage classes ranging from 600V to 500 kV. This role partners closely with utility clients, mentors engineering staff, and ensures solutions meet stringent technical, regulatory, and operational requirements while supporting system reliability and performance.

What You Will Do:

โ€ข Lead the design, specification, calculation, coordination, and implementation of protective relay settings and control schemes for major utility substations and renewable generation interconnections. โ€ข Develop complete relay settings packages, including relay set points, logic diagrams (including IEC 61850), configuration files, settings documentation, and as-built updates. โ€ข Perform short-circuit studies, protective relay coordination studies, breaker duty and overstress assessments, and recommend appropriate protection strategies for system and generation interconnections. โ€ข Ensure all protection schemes and relay settings comply with internal standards, client requirements, and applicable NERC PRC reliability standards. โ€ข Conduct and lead quality assurance and peer reviews of relay settings packages to verify accuracy, selectivity, coordination, and compliance. โ€ข Interpret protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and design documentation to implement robust relay logic aligned with design intent. โ€ข Support the full project lifecycle, including planning, detailed design, construction support, testing, commissioning, and postcommissioning support. โ€ข Present technical solutions to clients and stakeholders; respond to technical questions and support informed decision-making. โ€ข Coordinate closely with crossdisciplinary engineering teams, including Substation Physical, Protection & Controls, Civil/Structural, Transmission and Distribution, Generation, and Telecommunications. โ€ข Interface effectively with owners, contractors, equipment vendors, and project teams in both centralized and distributed work environments. โ€ข Mentor and coach entrylevel and developing engineers in protection fundamentals, relay settings methodologies, and industry best practices. โ€ข Contribute to proposal development and help advance departmental technical standards, tools, and internal processes. โ€ข Promote effective team delivery through clear communication, strong organization, and proactive workload and time management.

What You Will Bring:

โ€ข Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with a focus on power systems preferred. โ€ข Masters degree in Engineering may be considered in lieu of the bachelors requirement. โ€ข Minimum of 8 years of professional experience performing protective relay settings for major utility substations and/or renewable energy projects. โ€ข Demonstrated experience developing relay settings, logic diagrams, and protection philosophies for complex power systems. โ€ข Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) license required โ€ข ASPEN OneLiner and/or CAPE for fault/coordination analysis (similar software's). โ€ข SEL, GE, ABB, Alstomincluding line differential, step distance, pilot schemes, and substation device protection (capacitors, transformers, buses). โ€ข SEL AcSELerator QuickSet, GE EnerVista, Schneider MiCOM. โ€ข High computer competency; familiarity with PTC Mathcad is a plus; strong document control and organization skills. โ€ข Microsoft Suite Products (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.).
