Job description

If you are experienced in non-profit accounting, and looking for the perfect blend of stable work and flexible hours, this is the job for you! Shining Star Consulting (SSC) is seeking an experienced Controller with at least 4 years experience in nonprofit accounting. Must have hands-on experience in nonprofit accounting, and be comfortable managing mutliple clients/projects/deadlines.This is a fully remote position, and work days/times are flexible. Pay rate is $50 - $65/hour, depending on qualifications & location.
SSC provides outsourced accounting for nonprofit organizations. As a Controller, you will part-time (not temporary) Controller-level support for one or more nonprofit clients. Clients typically are <$3M revenue with relatively uncomplicated sources of income. This position reports to a Senior Director of Finance & Accounting at SSC.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
  • Client Relationship Management. Build and maintain strong client relationships. Proactively identify and address client needs. Ensure timely and high-quality communication and delivery of services. Collaborate with client's internal functions. Act as main point of contact for client queries, issues, and recommendations.
  • Financial Leadership. Analyze financial performance and identify trends. Support financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes. Develop and implement financial strategies.
  • Financial Operations. Manage day-to-day accounting operations, incl. AP/AR, Payroll, GL, and grants accounting. Ensure timely and accurate reporting, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements. Implement and maintain robust internal controls. Drive process improvement initiatives.
  • Team Leadership. Supervise and coach internal teams to meet client needs. Foster a positive and collaborative team culture. Monitor team performance, and ensure timely/accurate deliverables and procedures. Manage interpersonal dynamics and assure customer experience. Provide backup as-needed during bookkeepr/accountant absences.

Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of accounting experience, including managing accounting functions.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with nonprofit-specific financial management, analysis, and principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with grant rules and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with accounting systems in a nonprofit environment (QBO, Intacct, NetSuite, Blackbaud, Xero, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience successfully supervising people and teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communciation skills to build strong working relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Excellent analytic and problem solving; organization and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities and reliably meet deadlines.
  • Skilled in Excel, Google Sheets ang Google Workspace
  • Ability to rapidly learn and use new technology.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Experience selecting, implementing and integrating accounting software (Bill, Ramp, Divvy, Shopify, etc.)
  • Experience in financial compliance for nonprofits.
  • Experience in tax or other finance/accounting areas.
