Position: Performing Arts Center Technician (Part-time)
Department: Upper School

Position Summary

The Performing Arts Center (PAC) Assistant supports the PAC Technical Director in all aspects of theater and event production. Responsibilities include assisting with the design, setup, operation, and teardown of scenic elements, props, lighting, and sound for all Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) Performing Arts productions. The role also provides technical support for school events and outside rentals held in the PAC, ensuring smooth and professional execution of each function.

This is a part-time position averaging 26 hours per week, requiring evening and weekend availability.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Support all performing arts activities under the direction of the supervisor and/or directors, including set construction, setup and teardown, lighting and sound operation, and assistance with student performances and productions.

  • Provide audio/video and projection support for school events both within and outside the Performing Arts Center (PAC) as requested.

  • Respond courteously and professionally to requests from school directors, faculty, staff, and parent groups.

  • Complete clerical and administrative tasks as needed, such as word processing, filing, copying, and preparing reports or analyses.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace; ensure equipment and files are well cared for and up to date.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues, students, and visitors; demonstrate active listening and a positive, helpful attitude.

  • Model professionalism and ethical behavior through punctuality, reliability, and consistently high-quality work.

  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and inclusive environment by maintaining positive relationships with students, staff, and the broader school community.

  • Handle confidential information discreetly and share only with appropriate personnel on a need-to-know basis.

  • Stay current in technical knowledge and industry best practices through ongoing professional development opportunities.

  • Promote a safe working environment by following safety procedures and promptly reporting hazards or equipment concerns.

  • Remain flexible and adaptable to meet departmental and school needs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor of Arts in Theatre degree and/or five years related experience and/or training. BFA in Technical Theatre preferred.
  • Knowledge of set construction and removal, lighting, sound, video, computers and other equipment as required for stage productions, events and activities.
  • The ability to work independently in carrying out assignments to completion.
  • Task-oriented and the ability to follow rigid work instructions in a structured environment with the capacity to deal with non-routine matters, such as special projects, with minimal specific instructions.
  • Math competency in addition to planning and organizational skills.
  • The ability to multi-task.
  • The capacity to maintain strict confidentiality in all employment matters.
  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to interface with students, parents, faculty and staff.
  • The ability to read and interpret a variety of directives furnished in written, oral or diagram form including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • General familiarity with computers and Microsoft Windows products, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. Experience with Computer Aided Drafting Programs (i.e. WYSIWYG, Vectorworks, or AutoCAD) and Sound Production Software (i.e. Cubase, ProTools, or Tracktion) a plus.
Physical Requirements
This position may require the employee to regularly sit, stand, talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly indoors and the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
