Job description

The Medical Technologist - Lead is a position within the clinical laboratory team responsible for coordinating waived, moderately and highly complex testing across multiple hospital and/or clinic locations. The Medical Technologist Lead provides technical resources and daily direction to all testing personnel outside of the core laboratories with regard to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory requirements. The Medical Technologist Lead assures quality testing and accurate test performance through operator training, competency assessment, equipment monitoring, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, quality control review, and proficiency testing. This role requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated understanding of laboratory regulations and procedures.
What you will be doing:
  • Provide technical oversight and ensure that all laboratory operations are conducted in compliance with CLIA, TJC, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that test systems are properly functioning. Maintains, troubleshoots, and takes corrective action with equipment and information systems as needed.
  • Travel to offsite locations at least quarterly.
  • Coordinate training and competency assessments. Develop and maintain training and competency materials.
  • Provide support for on-site inspections and surveys. Participation in inspection readiness for appropriate regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Write and maintain current procedure manual(s) in area(s) of expertise using an approved format. Assist with the development, maintenance, and control of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Develop and oversee validation and verification studies for new instruments, methods, and tests.
  • Demonstrates the organization's values, and consistently follows hospital and laboratory policies & procedures.
  • Ability to organize work during heavy workload periods. Prioritizes/reorganizes workload in response to STAT requests.
  • Maintains clean and orderly work environment.
  • Correlates data and monitors test results for reasonability.
  • Participates in laboratory & hospital quality & compliance inspections and initiatives.
  • Promote Patient Safety goals.
  • Serve as a resource for other personnel and students.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes teamwork, mutual respect, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and training to support employee development, competency, and overall job success.
  • Promote open communication and continuous improvement while addressing staff concerns in a respectful and solution-focused manner.
  • Attend and participates in departmental meetings on a regular basis.
  • Maintains MLS certification through documented continuing education.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Assists other laboratory team members as needed to meet workload priorities.
  • Appropriately responds to written and verbal protocol communication.
  • Maintains a professional, positive, and solution-focused approach in interactions with patients, colleagues, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • POC: Provide support for point of care related information systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
  • Hematology: Provide support for hematology and coagulation systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
  • Chemistry: Provide support for chemistry systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
  • Microbiology: Provide support for microbiology systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
  • Blookbank: Provide support for blood bank systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.

What you will bring to the role:
  • Successful completion of a program in Medical Laboratory Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree
  • Successful completion of MLS (ASCP) certification or equivalent.
  • Meets federal guidelines (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments/CLIA) for performing high complexity testing.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, must communicate effectively with individuals from multiple disciplines.
  • Strong attention to detail, demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Ability to monitor own work to ensure quality, and possess excellent prioritization skills.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.

Note: BLS certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
