Job description

Salary: $100/hour

St. Joseph's Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers


Location: Hybrid / Recovery Campus - Massena, NY


Position: Part-time Medical Provider


Shift/schedule: 6 hours per week based on program need


Pay Rate: $100/hour


Position Summary: Provide basic primary care, psychiatric, and addiction treatment services to residents. This would include holding at least weekly office hours to evaluate, diagnose and treat any acute medical concerns, manage chronic medical conditions, and complete history and physicals on any new admissions. There may be additional time needed to review and approve medication.


Special Considerations: Work within a trauma-informed environment. Adhere to Sanctuary commitments. Commitment to Social Responsibility, Emotional Intelligence, Social Learning, Open Communication, Democracy, Nonviolence and Growth and Change performing the job duties.


Education and Training:

  1. Valid New York State Medical License (MD, DO, PA or NP)
  2. Current certification in CPR or First Aid Instructor (or higher -i.e. BLS or ACLS)
  3. Narcan trained (can be obtained after employment if needed)
  4. At least one (1) year of education, training, and/or experience in substance use disorder services.
  5. Board certification in addiction medicine from a certifying entity.
    1. Certification may be received within four (4) years of hire date.
  6. Experience prescribing MAT and psychotropic medications preferred.
  7. Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders preferred.
  8. Experience working in behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment settings, with a strong understanding of addiction medicine principles and evidence-based practices.
  9. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Current New York State medical license and registration.
  2. Current D.E.A. Certificate. Physicians may be hired as a probationary Psychiatrist but must obtain a federal DATA-2000 waiver within four (4) months of hire,
  3. Board Certified. Board Eligible at the time of hire, must be Board Certified within 3 years of hire date,
  4. Subspecialty board certification in addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Medical Specialties, or addiction certification from the American Society of Addiction Medicine, or certification by the American Board of Addiction Medicine {ABAM), certification in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine or hold a Subspecialty board certification in Addiction Medicine from the American Osteopathic Association. Physicians may be hired as Probationary Psychiatrist but must obtain the certification within four (4) years of being hired.
  5. Insurability (Malpractice)
  6. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)
  7. Current and unrestricted New York State Driver's license.


Essential Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive medical and addiction assessments upon admission, including a substance use history, identifying medical & psychiatric comorbidities, and determining withdrawal risk
  • Diagnose substance use and any co-occurring disorders
  • Manage patients in withdrawal and provide stabilization, including ordering and monitoring evidence-based pharmacologic protocols and documenting clinical response
  • Prescribe and manage medications for addiction treatment (MAT/MOUD) (e.g., buprenorphine & naltrexone), including dose adjustments, monitoring adherence, and addressing side effects or diversion risk
  • Provide ongoing primary medical care for acute and chronic conditions common in this population (e.g., infectious diseases, chronic pain, metabolic disorders), including appropriate screening and preventive services.
  • Address co-occurring psychiatric conditions in collaboration with behavioral health staff; prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications as indicated.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests as required to diagnose and treat any acute or chronic medical conditions
  • Participate in and coordinate care with the interdisciplinary treatment team consisting of counselors, therapists, nursing staff, case managers, and external providers
  • Provide clinical oversight and supervision of nursing and ancillary medical staff as applicable, ensuring adherence to protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure safe medication prescribing practices, including reconciliation, monitoring for interactions (e.g., sedatives, alcohol), and compliance with DEA, state, and facility policies.
  • Advise the interdisciplinary team on care transitions and discharge planning as needed to include referrals to outpatient providers and community partners.
  • Respond to urgent or emergent medical issues within the facility and coordinate transfer to higher levels of care when indicated
  • Educate patients on substance use disorders, medications, overdose prevention (including naloxone), harm reduction, and chronic disease management
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the medical record consistent with regulatory, accreditation, and payer requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement, policy development, and regulatory compliance activities, supporting a culture of safety and evidence-based practice.

Medical Leadership:

The Medical Provider is a physician who has overall responsibility for the:

  • Medical services provided by the program(s)
  • Oversight of the development and revision of policies, procedures and ongoing training.
  • Assist in the development of necessary referral and linkage relationships with other institutions and agencies.


Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local laws, regulations, and guidelines governing substance use treatment programs.
  • Respond to calls, inquiries, and appeals by payors and managed care organizations as needed.


Clinical Supervision and Training:

  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to medical staff, in the performance of medical services.
  • Engage in collaborative supervision with the respective program directors of non-medical staff in the provision of substance use disorder services.


Quality Improvement:

  • Lead efforts to continuously evaluate and improve the quality of medical care provided by the organization, including being knowledgeable on emerging trends in addiction medicine.


Research and Program Development:

  • Collaborate with senior leadership and clinical teams to develop innovative treatment programs, with a particular focus on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs).
