Summary
The Kitchen Assistant supports food production, kitchen safety, and sanitation for the YWCA’s child care programs. Responsibilities include preparing and serving meals and snacks, maintaining cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, and assisting with deliveries and inventory. This role also supports the Head Chef to ensure compliance with food safety standards. The position is part-time, 25 hours per week, year-round.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve meals and snacks for children according to established menus.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen by washing dishes, cleaning equipment and surfaces, sweeping/mopping floors, and removing trash after meals.
- Stock and organize food and supplies; deliver meals to classrooms.
- Receive and unload food service deliveries under the direction of the Head Chef.
- Communicate supply or meal needs between teachers and kitchen staff as necessary.
- Follow all food safety and sanitation protocols in both preparation and clean-up.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED
Experience
- Minimum 1 year prior experience working in a full-service kitchen
Certifications
- CPR amp; Pediatric First Aid or willingness to obtain
- ServSafe Certification or willingness to obtain
- Technical/Other Skills
- Knowledge of food preparation and handling
- Ability to operate standard commercial kitchen equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a child care, school, or community food service setting.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing meal schedules or dietary needs.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish or another language commonly spoken in the community.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: The employee will work in extreme heat and/or cold, stand for several hours per day, work with cleaning compounds, occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects or boxes up to 50 lbs, come in contact with children, and be exposed to childhood illnesses.
