Job description

Primary Position Function/Summary: Under the direction of the AssistantDirector,ย  supports the management of a55,000 sq ft ice arena facility, featuring 192' x 115' sheet of ice, fivelocker rooms, four party areas, and seating for 1,200 spectators. Responsiblefor managing day-to-day facility operations, operating concession stand and proshop, managing facility scheduling, and hiring student employees. Supervisesstudent staffย  and serves as back-up forall ice operations and maintenance, budget preparation, and auditing.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
Ice Arena Operations (60%)

1.ย  Serve as secondary backup for ice operations and maintenance and Zamboni drivers.
ย  ย  ย a. Assist with supervision, training, and scheduling of all Zamboni (ice resurfacing) Drivers
ย  ย  ย b. Assist with regular ice safety checks to ensure ice depth consistency, yearly ice thawing and re-freezing, and skate sharpeningย 
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย functions.
2.ย  Directly supervise ice arena events including hockey games, public skates, and private groups with up to 2000 attendees.
3.ย  Provide leadership to staff during public skates.
4.ย  Under the direction of the Associate Director of Ice Arena, assist with facility scheduling for all ice arena activities, includingย ย 
ย  ย  ย recreational skating, intramural sports, club sports, external rentals, learn-to-skate programs, hockey leagues, tournaments, andย 
ย  ย  ย special events.
5.ย  Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Ice Arena, enforce established risk management protocols through training,ย 
ย  ย  ย emergency procedures, equipment operations, and customer service.
6.ย  ย In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Ice Arena, assist with risk and safety training for all ice arena program staff.
7.ย  ย Manage day-to-day operations of concession stand/cafe and pro shop.
8. . Manage concession stand and pro shop inventory.
9.ย  ย Serve as secondary back up for food safety and risk management components for the concession stand/Cafe
10. Assist with special events at the Ice Arena and assist with additional Campus Recreation special events
11. Provide recommendations for policies and procedures for the Ice Arena
ย  ย  ย  a. Disseminate and enforce established policies and procedures.
12. Day-to-day management of cash box operations for all ice arena events outside of traditional work hours.

Administrative Duties: (35%)
1 . Coordinate the hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of 120+ student employees.
ย  ย  ย  a. Review internal applications and recommend qualified applicants.
ย  ย  ย  b. Assist with evaluation personnel via random shift audits and observations from professional and leadership staff.
ย  ย  ย  c. In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Student Development, coordinate student development efforts for Ice Arena Staff.
2.ย  Serve as primary back-up to the Assistant Director of Ice Arena for all payroll functions for all part-time graduate andย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย 
ย  ย  ย  undergraduate student staff and extra help.
3.ย  ย Program, manage and oversee Senior Recreational Hockey League.
4.ย  Coordinate and assist in managing the Intramural hockey league with the Assistant Director Competitive Sports & Communityย 
ย  ย  ย Programs and Competitive Sports & Community Programs Coordinator.
5.ย  Directly hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate all hockey officials.
6.ย  Follow all Campus Recreation and University personnel policies
7.ย  In absence of Associate Director of Ice Arena and Assistant Director of Ice Arena, act in public relations capacity for the Ice Arenaย 
ย  ย  ย  and all its programs. Including, but not limited to, various ad campaigns, speaking engagements, facility tours, etc.
8.ย  Research trends and make recommendations about the strategic direction of programs.
9.ย  Follow University and department purchasing policies and procedures.
10.Assist with the tracking and compiling of information and data in conjunction with monthly, mid-year, and yearly reports. Utilizeย ย 
ย  ย  ย  information to develop policies procedures, and strategic goals for the Ice Arena.
11. Assist as directed in the development of programs, departmental objectives, and long-term planning by performing research,ย 
ย  ย  ย providing recommendations, and implementing plans as appropriate.
12. Serve on Department and/or university committees as assigned.
13. Responsible for evening, weekend, and break coverage.
14. Participate as a member of the Campus Recreation professional staff in the development and implementation of policies andย 
ย  ย  ย  procedures.
15. Enforce and maintain Campus Recreation policies and procedures as they pertain to usage of facilities on campus.
Community Programs (5%)

1.ย  Support with pick-up and drop-off for campers along with other professional staff administrative tasks when needed.
2.ย  Assist with developing, evaluating, scheduling, managing part-time staff positions.
3.ย  Evaluate program satisfaction and needs assessment annually and implement strategies for retention and growth.
4.ย  Support University of Illinois' commitment to child abuse prevention as a mandatory reporter.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

Required:ย (Specialty Factor) Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management,Sports Administration, or a related field.
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  Atotal of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experiencein events and/or program planning.
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  Demonstratedfacility management experience.
Preferred: Master'sdegree in business administration, Management, SportsAdministration, or relevant field.
Experience:
Required: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management,Sports Administration, or relevant field.
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  One(1) year (12 months) of work experience with events and/or program planning.
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  One(1) year of facility management experience.
Preferred:
1.Experience with ice arena operations.
2.Previous experience supervising student staff.
3.Previous experience working with students.
Training, Licenses, orCertifications:
Required:
Preferred: Possession of ServSafe certificationor similar food protection certification.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment conducive to colder temperatures to support specific
areas of the Ice Arena.
