How much do part time hourly medical coder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for part time hourly medical coder in the United States is $22.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can I do part-time medical coding?

Part-time medical coding is common and allows coders to work fewer hours than full-time positions, often providing flexibility for those balancing other commitments. Many healthcare facilities and coding companies offer part-time roles, which may require certification such as CPC or CCS and proficiency with coding software. Scheduling can vary, and part-time roles may have different benefits and responsibilities compared to full-time positions.

Will AI eventually replace medical coders?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist medical coders by automating routine coding tasks, but it is unlikely to fully replace them in the near future. Medical coders' expertise in understanding complex medical records, coding guidelines, and ensuring accuracy remains essential, especially for complex cases and compliance. Human oversight and certification are important components of the coding process, making the role of medical coders valuable even as AI tools become more integrated.

What type of medical coder gets paid the most?

In medical coding, certified professional coders with specialized skills, such as those in inpatient hospital coding or with credentials like CPC-H or CCS, tend to earn higher salaries. Experienced coders working in outpatient or hospital settings, especially with advanced certifications, generally receive higher pay than entry-level or general coders.

Can medical coding be a side job?

Medical coding is often suitable as a part-time or side job because it typically offers flexible hours and remote work options. Certified medical coders can perform coding tasks outside of full-time employment, making it a viable side gig for those with relevant skills and certifications. However, maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines are important regardless of the work arrangement.
