What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Chief Development Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Chief Development Officer, you need expertise in fundraising strategy, donor relations, and nonprofit management, often supported by a degree in business, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with donor management databases (such as Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge) and experience with CRM tools and fundraising platforms are typically required. Outstanding relationship-building, leadership, and communication skills enable you to engage stakeholders and inspire teams effectively. These competencies are vital to drive sustainable revenue growth and ensure organizational impact even on a part-time schedule.

What is the difference between Part Time Chief Development Officer vs Part Time Development Manager?

AspectPart Time Chief Development OfficerPart Time Development Manager
ResponsibilitiesStrategic fundraising, high-level partnership development, organizational growthImplementing development plans, managing donor relations, executing fundraising campaigns
Required CredentialsExperience in executive fundraising, leadership skills, often a background in nonprofit or corporate developmentFundraising experience, communication skills, familiarity with development strategies
Work EnvironmentExecutive-level meetings, strategic planning sessions, board interactionsOffice-based, event planning, donor engagement activities

The Part Time Chief Development Officer focuses on high-level strategic development and organizational growth, often working with senior leadership and boards. In contrast, the Part Time Development Manager handles day-to-day fundraising activities and donor relations. Both roles require development experience, but the CDO is more strategic and leadership-oriented, while the Development Manager is more operational.

How does a part-time Chief Development Officer typically balance strategic leadership responsibilities with limited working hours?

As a part-time Chief Development Officer (CDO), prioritizing high-impact activities is essential due to limited hours. Most part-time CDOs focus on setting fundraising strategy, cultivating key donor relationships, and guiding the development team, while delegating day-to-day execution to staff. Regular communication and clear goal-setting help ensure alignment and continuity across the team. This structure allows the organization to benefit from the CDO’s expertise while maintaining operational momentum, making strong time management and delegation skills especially important.

What is a part-time Chief Development Officer?

A part-time Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing an organization’s fundraising, strategic partnerships, and overall development efforts, but works fewer hours than a full-time CDO. This arrangement allows organizations, often nonprofits or startups, to access high-level expertise in fundraising and growth strategy without the cost of a full-time salary. Part-time CDOs typically focus on donor relations, major gift cultivation, and planning development campaigns, while collaborating with other leadership team members to meet the organization’s goals.
