Job description

Part-time, on-call Campus Building Attendant.

Schedule will vary and be based on department and Academy needs. 

Wage: $18.00/hr increasing to $19.23/hr on 7/1

Provides monitoring and visibility to ensure the protection of academy buildings and the personal safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus buildings to include gymnasium complex, administrative buildings and parking areas during scheduled open hours and academy events.

Key Accountabilities
  • Maintains a pleasant demeanor while providing a presence in the main hub areas, main entrances, and parking areas of administrative buildings and athletic facilities.
  • Assists visitors, by providing directions and access to assigned areas of the campus.
  • Makes periodic contact with building staff and continuous circulation, throughout assigned campus buildings.
  • Ensures that visitors, spectators and/or participants are in their appropriate areas.
  • Prohibits unauthorized access to the areas not reserved or open to the public.
  • Assists in securing the facilities when appropriate.
  • Understands and employs standard operating procedures (SOP’s) in carrying out duties and assignments.
  • Responds to any situation that threatens the safety or security of people, buildings or the facilities.
  • Assists with emergencies by calling the town police and campus safety when necessary, rendering assistance, directing traffic, and directing emergency personnel to the emergency location.
  • Assists with parking around the assigned areas when necessary.
  • Assists in fire watch and crowd control at certain Academy events at various locations.
  • Provides monthly fire extinguisher inspections and complete accompanying reports.
  • Wears appropriate uniform and identification.
  • Uses the appropriate equipment, keys and radio.
  • Prepares written reports including a detailed daily log sheet.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Incumbent is expected to work with a high level of independence and autonomy, and exercise a high degree of initiative, influence, and judgment in decisions impacting staff and department operations.

 Expected to solve problems or address issues that require immediate attention.

Internal & External Contacts

Frequent contact with students, Dean of Students office, PEA administrative and academic offices, faculty, coaches, and staff.  External contacts may include parents, outside organizations, visitors and local community neighbors.

Position Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Full-time staff must complete Campus Safety Training from Training Academy held annually.
  • Completion of CPR/AED and First Aid certification training within 60 days of employment.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting preferred.
  • Customer service experience desirable.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.
  • Ability to prepare and effectively present both oral and written information concerning activities and operations to internal and external constituents.
  • Knowledge of emergency management concepts and practices to include prevention/ mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Knowledge of federal and state codes and regulations relating to safety and security, fire codes and emergency management and compliance.
  • Knowledge building/campus emergency procedures including but not limited to evacuations, fire drills, illness, blue light phone and AED equipment and other life safety equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students by building trust and credibility.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as a strong customer focus.
  •  strict adherence to confidential policies is required.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously. 
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
    Physical Requirements
      
    1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
    2. Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).
     
      Additional Requirements
      1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 2 years).
      2. May be required to handle hazardous materials in the work area.
      3. Maintain safety and security physical requirements.
      4. Must consistently wear assigned uniform and equipment and adhere to the appearance guidelines.
      5. Must abide by all guidelines as listed in the general orders.
