FEDERAL WORK STUDY - STUDENT WORKER-FOOD PANTRY

City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.

The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) is a federally funded financial aid program that provides subsidized part-time employment for eligible students in order to assist them with postsecondary financial needs. City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) complies with the Department of Education's regulations regarding the FWS program and allows students to benefit from this opportunity.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Reporting to an assigned supervisor, theย Healthy Market Food Pantry Student Workerย performs operational and manual tasks related to receiving, shelving, and organizing packaged and refrigerated food products as well as fresh produce for distribution to students, CCC personnel, and the surrounding community. Performs related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operations & Pantry Support

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Assists Healthy Market Food Pantry staff in the day-to-day functions of the Food Pantryย and other food support programs.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Assists in stocking and organizing pantry shelves, refrigerators, and freezers with packaged food, produce, and other items.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Helps unload and unpack food deliveries using carts or dollies.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Sorts and stores food items while checking expiration dates.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Helps prepare bags or boxes of food for distribution.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Assists with setting up and cleaning up for food distribution events.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Moves and organizes food and supplies before and after events.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Follows basic food safety and cleanliness guidelines.

Customer Service & Outreach

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Greets pantry visitors and helps check them in for food distribution.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Answers basic questions in person or by phone about pantry services and events.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Helps share information about food pantry events by distributing flyers or posting materials.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maintains a welcoming and respectful environment for all participants.

General Support

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Participates in pantry/other food support program orientations or events as needed.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Works alongside other student workers and volunteers as part of a team.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Assists with simple record-keeping tasks such as sign-in sheets or tracking inventory.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSย 

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The job requires lifting, bending, carrying, unloading, and moving of food items. Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. in the performance of duties.ย 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre-credit or credit classes.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students).

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Applicants must be in good standing no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Enrolled Freshmen may work during the break prior to attending the next school term.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  All positions are employment at-will.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Maximum of 20 hours per week.

QUALIFICATIONS

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Previous relevant work experience desirable but not required.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Must be able to work flexible hours as needed

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Must demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and strong customer service skills in all interactionsย 

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Good verbal and written communication skills.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Ability to work effectively and respectfully in a culturally diverse environment, fostering inclusivity and collaboration.ย 

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Basic computer skills and familiarity in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
