Downtown Ace Hardware is looking for a Paint Department Associate

Brand Summary

We are your local hardware store, and we are a part of your community.  Ace Hardware has over 5,000

stores around the world with most of those stores independently owned and operated by local

entrepreneurs. These hard-working men and women are part of the fabric of your community. They

are small business owners who are local and loyal...just like they should be.  While others have

become large and impersonal, at Ace, we've remained small and very personal. That's why we say a

visit to Ace is like a visit to your neighborhood.

Paint Department Associate

Downtown Ace Hardware – Fort Collins, CO

26–40 Hours per Week | Weekends Required (In-Season)

Downtown Ace Hardware is seeking a detail-oriented, customer-focused Paint Department Associate to join our team.

This role requires strong product knowledge, problem-solving ability, and confidence in guiding customers through a wide range of painting and finishing projects — from simple touch-ups to full interior and exterior transformations.

If you enjoy helping people choose the right product and explaining why it matters, this may be a great fit.

While our preference is to hire long-term team members, we recognize that some strong candidates may be available for the summer season only. If you bring reliability, initiative, and strong availability during our busiest months, we encourage you to apply.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide expert guidance on interior and exterior paint products
  • Learn and represent brands including Benjamin Moore and Clark+Kensington
  • Assist customers with paint selection, sheen, finish, and color decisions
  • Mix and tint paint accurately
  • Educate customers on surface prep, primers, and proper application techniques
  • Support customers with exterior and interior stains, spray paint, and specialty coatings
  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked paint department displays
  • Assist throughout the store as needed
  • Paint is a consultative department where accuracy, confidence, and attention to detail matter.
  • This is an active, fast-paced department — especially during peak spring and summer months.

Provide knowledgeable recommendations on:

  • Adhesives
  • Caulking and sealants
  • Drywall repair products
  • Wood treatments and protectants
  • Paint thinners, mineral spirits, and solvents

What We’re Looking For:

Strong interest in paint, finishing, or home improvement

Ability to absorb and retain detailed product knowledge

Comfort explaining technical information clearly and confidently

Strong attention to detail (especially with color and mixing accuracy)

Initiative — you look for what needs to be done

Reliable attendance, especially on weekends

Positive, solution-focused communication

Experience in paint, construction, or home improvement is a plus — but coachability and willingness to learn are equally important.

You should be someone who:

  • Takes pride in precision
  • Enjoys learning technical information
  • Can guide customers calmly through decisions
  • Moves with purpose in a fast-paced retail environment
  • Strong attention to detail (especially with color and mixing accuracy)
  • Initiative — you look for what needs to be done
  • Reliable attendance, especially on weekends
  • Positive, solution-focused communication

Schedule & Availability

26–40 hours per week

Weekends are required during peak spring and summer season

Store Hours:

Monday–Saturday: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Sunday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Team members work a variety of shifts including mornings and evenings

Strong preference for candidates available both weekend days during spring and summer.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (paint cans and materials)

Comfortable climbing ladders

Ability to move and handle paint and related materials safely
