Position Summary: The Packaging Engineer II is responsible for exercising sound engineering judgement in the development of high-quality, cost-effective, functional packaging solutions which promote the corporate brand. This advanced role requires a strong working knowledge of packaging design. The experienced Packaging Engineer II will be attentive to detail in planning, coordinating and completing all aspects of multiple packaging projects concurrently in a timely manner and with little oversight. The Packaging Engineer II works both independently and in a team environment, providing guidance to less senior Packaging Engineers. Collaboration with Marketing, Project Management, Research and Development and external vendors is required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the various aspects of packaging development for many different products simultaneously, including tracking and prioritizing development tasks.
  • Interface with Marketing, R&D, Compliance, Legal, Quality, and other departments to identify packaging needs and approaches for each product.
  • Create cost-effective packaging designs for new and existing products that are innovative, efficient, and meet the identified needs.
  • Ensure that packaging designs are fully released on schedule to support new product production timelines.
  • Collaborate with vendors and Supply Chain to determine costs and feasibility of packing options. Initiate purchase orders to procure prototypes for evaluation.
  • Ensure product packaging is in compliance with SIG SAUER quality standards, industry standards, and specific customer packaging requirements.
  • Generate CAD models, detailed technical drawings, specifications, and other pertinent technical data for SIG SAUER product packaging.
  • Responsible for completing documentation revisions for packaging as needed.
  • Identify package testing protocols and carry out validation testing to qualify the release of product package systems.
  • Responsible for the accuracy of packaging items in SKU BOMs within the PLM system.
  • Process change requests and change orders within the PLM system efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Follow all work and quality procedures to ensure quality system compliance and a high quality of work. Provide technical expertise for packaging risk assessments and failure mode and root cause analyses.
  • Travel infrequently.
  • Engage in continuous improvement projects and tasks.
  • Participate in and sustain 5S activities.
  • Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education/Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, and 3-6 years of experience working as a Packaging Engineer. Technical knowledge of packaging materials, formats, and processes is required. Experience developing packaging per Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the manufacturing process for packing materials such as paper, molded fiber, corrugated, rigid box, crates, cases, foam, and plastic trays.
  • Working knowledge of product fragility, environmental protections, electrical protections, and package testing.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to compile, analyze, and present data. Proficiency using Microsoft Project and monday.com is preferred.
  • Proficient using CAD software for parametric solid modeling, drafting, and building assemblies; SolidWorks and ArtiosCAD highly preferred. Basic proficiency with creative design software such as Adobe Suite or equivalent required.
  • Experience using a PLM system such as Agile preferred.
  • Able to effectively manage a multitude of different projects concurrently, using strong organizational and planning skills to prioritize and complete tasks/projects in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently, with little to no guidance.
  • Demonstrate effective coaching through sharing technical packaging knowledge, providing guidance and offering feedback.
  • Able to work efficiently within tight timeframes in a focused manner to meet project timelines.
  • Must exhibit creativity and grasp of knowledge in problem solving scenarios. Must be innovative and rise to the challenge of finding new ways to approach design, estimating scenarios and production capabilities.
  • Experience using and maintaining firearms and/or related products is preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. Security Mandates.
