Job description

Position Overview:Are you ready to make a difference this summer while building valuable skills? Join the dynamic seasonal team at Rock Springs Ranch as a Cabin Counselor. This is more than just a job—it’s a chance to foster community, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the mission of Kansas 4-H: empowering youth to lead and thrive. Usually with a co-counselor, you will lead a cabin of 10-12 campers of a similar age for week-long overnight experiences for campers ages 6-16 .

The Kansas 4-H Foundation is the 501(c)(3) fundraising arm for Kansas 4-H, the state’s largest positive youth development program, as well as Rock Springs Ranch, the state 4-H camp and conference center. The Foundation works with businesses, organizations, individuals and families who share a common desire to support a statewide effort of growing future leaders. Rock Springs Ranch is a 735-acre property located in the heart of the flint hills and is accredited by the American Camp Association.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead: You will be a friendly, caring leader and role model at camp. You will maintain the camp’s safety and procedures while embracing the ‘controlled chaos’ whenever possible.

  • Collaborate: The voice of everyone at camp matters. You will work with diverse staff and campers to create an inclusive, engaging experience.

  • Hospitality: With a “Camper First” philosophy, you will create a welcoming, supportive environment for all campers.

  • Support: Supporting campers and staff alike to create an equitable experience. Camp is for all, and some folks need extra support to get the most out of camp.

  • Activities: Cabin Counselors also receive training for and teach activities at camp. Activities include but are not limited to canoeing, teambuilding, rock climbing & high ropes, arts & crafts, survival skills, archery, sports, swimming, photography, mountain biking, BBs, and games.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Knowledge about the outdoor environment with the ability to plan and organize activities that show spontaneity, creativity, and flexibility.

  • Willing and able to receive training to provide a safe and fulfilling summer camp experience

  • Must be comfortable communicating with parents and enjoy working with children.

  • At least one year of working with children and/or youth is preferred.

  • Experience in education, youth work, or recreation and certifications in First Aid, CPR, and lifeguarding are a plus.

  • Promote and incorporate the Kansas 4-H values and mission into all aspects of the job and community.

  • Positive, service-oriented attitude serving diverse groups of campers in regard to age, ethnicity, gender, race, economic status, religion, etc.

Why Join Us?

  • Personal Development: You’ll have many opportunities for free training and certifications, as well as opportunities to advance and potentially find a long-term career.

  • Housing & Meals: Summer Camp Cabin Counselors are required to live on-site, and food is provided.

  • Community Impact: Be part of a mission-driven organization that uplifts youth and inspires positive change.

  • Life Skills: Develop problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork skills that last a lifetime.

  • Fun & Connection: Work with a passionate team in a vibrant, outdoor summer camp setting.

Work Schedule and Benefits:

  • Seasonal Position: Full-time from May to August.

  • Housing Provided: Summer Camp Cabin Counselors are required to live on-site.

  • Meals Provided: Enjoy free meals while on duty.

  • Competitive Pay: Earn while gaining valuable experience.
