Hours - 40+


POSITION SUMMARY

Roundup River Ranch seeks experienced pediatric nurses for seasonal summer employment who want to make a difference in the lives of children with serious medical conditions. The Summer Staff Nurse supports the medical safety, health, and wellbeing of campers when camp is in session and during on-site programming through direct medical care of campers. This position requires more than 1 year of pediatric nursing experience. The position needs a team player who values teamwork and will collaborate with other seasonal summer staff nurses and the Medical Team (Nursing Director (ND), Medical Director and Nursing Manager). This position provides all necessary direct medical care for campers during the duration of their time at camp including medications, treatments and daily procedures. It is expected that the cabin nurse will be with their cabin as much as possible throughout the day. This position supports the training of medical volunteers, as well as providing training and education in basic medical protocols for non-medical staff and volunteers involved in the direct care and support of campers. This position will report to the ND. This position will also support the Lead Nurse and Nursing Manager. 


Position Dates: May 11th-August 7th including training; specific workdays/days off to be provided in accordance with camp schedule.

Weekly rate: $1,500 per week

Contract length: 13 weeks

Total contract compensation: $19,500 (not including bonus!)

Eligible for bonus of up to $3,500!  


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Job Responsibilities

  • Summer Staff Nurses provide routine and emergent nursing care for campers, working under the direction of the Nursing Director.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Team (ND, Medical Director, Nursing Manager, Lead Nurse, Summer Staff Nurses), Volunteer Physicians/Providers, Volunteer Nurses, and Program Camp Staff (Camp Director, Assistant Camp Directors) to ensure that campers are provided with the highest quality of medical care.   
  • Summer Staff Nurses will provide first line support for the medical needs of their campers in their assigned cabin during each camp session. 
  • Provide coverage in our Medical Facility (known as The Depot) and triage campers appropriately when needed. 

Job Duties

  • Prepare and administer medications as scheduled and as necessary to campers. Scheduling, preparation, and administration of camper medications, including; routine scheduled medications, over the counter medications, and any medications prescribed or ordered while the camper is on-site. These routes include oral, IM, SQ, IV, topical, ophthalmic, inhaled, and nebulizer medications, or as directed.
  • Administration of infusions such as IV fluids, TPN and antibiotics. 
  • Assess the need for emergent care and provide pre-hospital emergent care in conjunction with ND, Volunteer providers and other medical team members as needed. 
  • Monitoring of Continuous Glucose Monitoring devices and Insulin Pumps of campers, if needed.
  • Provide routine procedures as scheduled and as necessary for each camper, including the care of internal and external central lines, dressing changes, G-Tube and other continuous/bolus feeds, urinary catheters, bowel and bladder programs, pulmonary care, etc.
  • Assist with lab testing including Covid-19, Strep, Flu and others as directed for campers, staff, and volunteers as needed.
  • Collaborate with Behavioral Health Team and Cabin Life Team to support behavioral needs. 
  • Support Nursing Manager in management and organization of inventory in The Depot. 
  • Provide medical oversight, triage and first aid as needed at high-risk activity areas. 
  • Provide coverage in the Depot during daytime hours as directed by Nursing Manager/Lead Nurse/ND.  
  • Document and maintain records of medical care and medication delivery, including data entry and use of online database and logbook. Ensure confidentiality of medical information and medical records at camp. 
  • Work in partnership with the Medical Team and Camp Program Staff to provide support and education to seasonal camp staff and all volunteers.
  • Serve as an educational and leadership resource for staff and volunteers regarding the illnesses and medical needs of their specific campers as well as the growth, development, activities of daily living and special hygiene or dietary needs of campers. 
  • Work with the provider and nursing volunteers to provide routine and emergent clinical care to campers on-site (including distribution of meds, medical procedures, lab studies). This includes being the response team in emergency situations along with providers on call. 
  • Provide supervision and guidance to cabin medical volunteers as needed. 
  • Participate in Medical Check-Ins for Arrival Days, including traveling with campers to/from camp as medical supervision for campers. This will also be required for Departure days and will be on a rotating basis with other Summer Staff Nurses or Lead Nurse. 
  • Make phone calls to camper families before each session to update medications/medical needs, medical information, and verify pre-camp application information with parents/guardians.  
  • Assist Medical Team and Lead Nurse during summer staff training with education surrounding pediatric medical care that non-medical summer staff may encounter with direct care of campers.
  • May be asked to travel or drive camp vehicle with campers for local or emergent care, or to obtain medical supplies and medications. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

JOB COMPETENCIES

Be able to move items or people. This will require the strength and mobility to push, pull, lift, and carry.

Be able to identify emergency situations, either by seeing them happen, hearing cries for help, or hearing the emergency alert protocol.

Have the strength, endurance, and physical skills to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations, according to written emergency procedures and plans.

Be able to demonstrate or participate in camp activities as they supervise and instruct campers: this will require the ability to walk, sit, climb, kneel, crouch, stoop, and stand.


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experienced Registered Nurse with more than 1 year experience of pediatric care; this can include general pediatrics, pediatric ER (adult/peds combo okay), PICU, Pediatric Home Health or other specialty pediatric units.

State of Colorado Registered Nursing License (or a multi-state license)

Current AED/BLS and PALS or ENPC certification

Special Requirements - This is a residential position. Accommodation will be provided for the duration of the contract and meals (including dietary needs) will be provided while camp is in session.
