What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight fence installer?

To thrive as an Overnight Fence Installer, you need experience with construction or manual labor, knowledge of fence installation techniques, and a valid driver's license. Familiarity with power tools, measuring equipment, and sometimes GPS tracking systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently during off-hours are important soft skills. These qualifications ensure fences are installed securely and efficiently, maintaining safety and meeting client expectations during overnight shifts.

What is an overnight fence?

Overnight fence workers are individuals who install, monitor, or repair temporary fencing during nighttime hours, often for construction sites, events, or emergency situations. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that barriers are properly set up and maintained to provide safety and security when most people are not present. Working overnight requires attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work in low-light conditions. These workers may also respond to urgent requests for fence installation or repairs outside of regular business hours.

Job description

New Energy Equity and Energy Support Services is seeking a motivated and hardworking individual to join our field operations team for the 2026 season. Safety is our top priority. We operate on active commercial solar sites around high-voltage equipment, heavy machinery, and variable terrain—maintaining a strict safety culture is foundational to our work.

This seasonal role is highly physical and essential to the successful execution of mechanical-only vegetation and civil management across a regional portfolio of commercial-scale solar arrays. Operating on a 4-day weekly field schedule, the Helper will support the Lead Technician in daily manual operations, focusing on high-precision field work, equipment operation, and site infrastructure maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Safety & Compliance:

  • Safety Adherence: Adhere to all stringent safety protocols and company guidelines, maintaining situational awareness in high-voltage environments at all times.
  • Hazard Awareness: Actively participate in site hazard assessments and follow all directions from the Lead Technician regarding safe work practices.

Field Execution:

  • Execute Detailed Vegetation Control: Perform high-volume mechanical trimming and weed-whipping around sensitive electrical equipment, racking posts, and perimeter fencing.
  • Secondary Equipment Operation: Operate commercial-grade zero-turn mowers to support the Lead Technician in clearing large-acreage arrays and perimeter buffers.
  • Civil Infrastructure Maintenance: Assist in performing minor civil tasks, including basic fence repair and the removal of trees/heavy brush using a chainsaw.
  • Invasive Species Management: Support the Lead Technician in identifying and removing noxious and invasive plant species manually to ensure site compliance.

Maintenance & Operational Support:

  • Vehicle & Trailer Operations: Safely operate company vehicles and assist in the loading, unloading, and securing of equipment on 20-foot trailers.
  • Equipment Care & Maintenance: Perform daily cleaning and routine in-house maintenance on mowers, trimmers, and chainsaws according to manufacturer and company safety standards.
  • Site Documentation: Support the Lead Technician in capturing site photos and documenting field conditions for accurate reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience operating commercial field equipment (zero-turn mowers, string trimmers) is highly desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license and comfort driving company vehicles.
  • Previous experience with basic fence repair or gate maintenance is a plus.
  • Experience with safe chainsaw operation and brush clearing is a plus.
  • Basic experience with small engine repair or mechanical equipment troubleshooting is a strong advantage.

SKILLS

  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a small team and take direction from leadership.
  • Uncompromising commitment to personal safety and proper PPE use.
  • Strong attention to detail regarding site cleanliness and precision trimming.
  • Reliable and punctual, with the ability to meet early morning departure times (7:00 AM).
  • Ability to maintain high productivity standards during long, highly physical shifts in a field environment.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for routine equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAVEL

  • Daily Regional Travel: Extensive regional travel is required during the season. Travel is primarily daily commute travel to and from assigned job sites, returning home most evenings.
  • Overnight Travel: Scheduled overnight stays are rare and typically limited to exceptional circumstances or distant sites (possibly 1-2 per month).
  • Physical Capability: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and rain. Physical ability to lift 50 lbs. and walk long distances across uneven terrain daily while carrying equipment.

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas at this time.

The expected annual compensation range for this position is $50,000 - $60,000, encompassing base pay and potential incentive target opportunity. This range is a good faith estimate based on the position's requirements. Specific compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary depending on factors such as relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions. Additionally, this position may qualify for a comprehensive benefits package, including Retirement Benefits, Medical, Dental & Vision, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Account, Life Insurance and Disability, Tuition Reimbursement, Voluntary Benefits, Paid Absences, and more.
