Description:

The Outreach Assistant position is the first employee SALT guests interact with. Outreach Assistants assists with all tasks involved with providing direct services to our clients. This includes setting up, preparing, initiating, operating, maintaining, and breaking down the mobile drop-in center throughout the various locations for the homeless. The Outreach Assistants record all outreach data by inputting it into SALT systems. Responsibilities may include assisting with volunteer management, and processing in-kind donations.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Outreach and Support:

  1. Perform all outreach services to include registration, mail, laundry, showers, charging stations, clothing, hygiene products, etc.
  2. Build trusting relationships with homeless individuals, offering empathy, compassion, and non-judgmental support.
  3. Assist with preparing supplies for outreach events at different locations.
  4. Assist in food/supply distribution, handing out clothing (socks, underwear, shoes, etc.), creating snack bags, and distributing hygiene items (deodorant, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, etc.).
  5. Adhere to all policies and procedures when delivering services and resources to the unsheltered.
  6. Assist with guiding, directing, and creating relationships with volunteers.
  7. Ensure cleanliness of Outreach office and designated areas of building

Data Entry:

  1. Accurately input data of each person experiencing homelessness to track impact in the SALT system.
  2. Ensure that all clients fill out waivers and other paperwork when necessary.

Customer Service:

  1. Provide exceptional customer service and ensure a positive experience for all guests
  2. Show a high level of emotional intelligence.
  3. Understand and practice reflective listening.

Resource Management:

  1. Be a good steward of outreach supplies and report low inventory to Director of Outreach Services
  2. Maintain supplies needed for the shower trailer, laundry trailer, registration room, etc. and replenish for the next outreach day.
  3. Process in-kind donations as directed by the Director of Outreach Services

Qualifications:

  • Strong problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity are essential traits for success in this role
  • Organized, accurate, thorough, detail-oriented, and able to monitor work for quality
  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening and conflict resolution
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including homeless individuals, service providers, and community members
  • Proficiency in crisis intervention techniques
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and Google docs

Preferences

  • Experience in working with the homeless and/or in customer service related fields

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, run and patrol for extended periods
  • Must hear and see well (either naturally or with correction)
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead
  • A considerable amount of time making repetitive motions
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interactions with customers
  • Ability to function with frequent temperature changes between indoors and out
  • Work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain
  • Stand and walk continuously for up to 8-10 hours during a shift while providing customer care
