Title: ORAL COMMUNICATION FACILITATOR - SPECIAL EDUCATION
This Position is: Non-Exempt
Primary Function:
Provide communication support and language enhancement/enrichment to facilitate communication for a student with hearing loss, who may use personal hearing aids, cochlear implants and/or FM devices; will be required to provide clarification at times for a student learning to listen; assist the special education and/or classroom teacher by performing assigned duties related to the learning process as outlined in students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP); reinforce instruction under the direction/supervision of the teacher or building administrator.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Previous related experience in effective use of sign language and development of listening and spoken language skills in children who are deaf or hard of hearing;
- Preferred Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level 1 / 2 or passed written EIPA and have EIPA Level 3 or hold any Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certificate (Excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation)
- Considerable knowledge of interpreting services, including oral interpreting
- Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, and the general public
- Ability to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) in the development of listening and spoken language skills
- Skill in handling varied, multiple duties
- Ability to work with and communicate with students, teachers, administrators, and parents
- Basic knowledge and/or experience related to area of assignment
- Awareness of various characteristics of students with special needs
- Demonstration of initiative and self-direction.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and dexterity and exemplary oral and written communication skills required to perform all performance responsibilities.
- Ability to gather and interpret data gathered in all school settings.
- Assist the student who is deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) in locating the source of sound (speaker/teacher) and in maintaining preferential seating and direction of student's attention to speaker to include classroom, assemblies, special presentations, and other school activities occurring within the regular school day.
- Assist the student who is deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) by repeating and/or rephrasing spoken messages and/or putting spoken language in written/typed form as needed
- Providing prompts to student to self-advocate for their hearing needs
- Gathering materials for previewing vocabulary, concepts, and underlying language structures that may need to be pre-taught
- Encourage peers and adults to use normal speech and language when interacting with the student who is D/HH in order to model appropriate oral communication
- Perform assigned duties related to the learning process
- Implement proper use and care of assistive devices/auditory equipment within activities during the instructional day
- Encourage and foster interaction with other students
- Collect data to monitor student comprehension and speech/language under supervision of staff..
- Provide professional communication with staff and parents under the direction of and in collaboration with the special education teacher
- Participate in staff development activities related to area of assignment
- Maintain confidentiality with regard to student records and information
- Perform other duties as assigned by teacher and principal
