Mechanical Commissioning Manager

Role Summary

Position: Startup / Commissioning Lead - Mechanicalย 

Location : Denver OR Reno

Type: Full-time;ย 

Purpose: Lead and execute mechanical pre-commissioning, commissioning (Levels 3, 4, 5), and startup activities for data center and base-building mechanical systems including chillers, boilers, pumps, water loops, cooling distribution equipment, control valves, humidifiers, split units, life-safety interfaces, and Building Management Systems (BMS).

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, including equipment pre-functional checks, functional performance tests, system integration tests, and Level 3-5 commissioning tasks.
  • Create and review commissioning procedures, test plans, checklists, punch lists, and as-built documentation; maintain accurate test reports and commissioning logs.
  • Witness and validate equipment testing and sequences of operation; verify connectivity, control logic, and receipt of vendor operational documentation.
  • Lead field teams of technicians and subcontractors during startup; assign tasks, supervise workmanship, and ensure inter-discipline coordination with electrical, controls, and civil trades.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and controls issues during startup; coordinate vendor support and recommend corrective actions to meet design intent and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders including design engineers, project managers, commissioning agents, contractors, and facilities operations to integrate systems without impacting operational portions of the campus or building.
  • Monitor and report commissioning progress, track issues, and provide feedback to program management to drive continuous improvement.
  • Implement quality control and HSE measures; ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards; perform lockout/tagout and other site safety checks.
  • Mentor junior staff and support development of less experienced commissioning engineers and technicians.
  • Support construction activity as needed to ensure system design, installation, and testing adhere to operational standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Associate degree, technical certification, or Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC, or related trade; equivalent military or workplace training accepted.
  • Experience: 3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical construction, commissioning, or startup; demonstrated experience with chillers, pumps, boilers, piping, and HVAC systems.
  • Technical skills: Ability to read P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and control schematics; strong troubleshooting, test execution, and commissioning documentation skills.
  • Software: Proficiency with MS Office Suite and common commissioning or project tracking tools.
  • Mobility: Ability to travel to multiple data center sites across the U.S. as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data center experience in engineering, commissioning, or project management.
  • Certifications such as ASHRAE commissioning, BCxA, or OSHA 30.
  • Prior experience developing or reviewing commissioning documentation and sequences of operation for complex facilities.

  • Analytical ability to diagnose system malfunctions, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Advanced mechanical knowledge of systems used in data center environments and base buildings.
  • Technical planning skills to develop solutions and create test plans.
  • Communication: strong written and verbal skills for technical reporting, stakeholder coordination, and training operations staff.
