Job description

Occupational Summary:
The Head Esports Coach reports to the Director of Athletics and is responsible for developing and launching the varsity eSports program and is in charge of recruiting student-players and is in charge of recruiting student-players, managing the budget, overseeing the general operations, coaching, and building the program identity. The Head Esports Coach will instruct student-players in the rules and fundamentals of Esports. This is a part-time position.
Work Performed:
  1. Direct all aspects of the coaching and management of an Esports program
  2. Initiate and run practice, competition, and team building activities
  3. Oversee the recruiting and retention of qualified student-players
  4. Instruct 1 credit hour course(s) per semester within the Department of Athletics
  5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of and ability to comply with any associated league, and institutional rules and regulations
  6. Monitor and mentor the academic and mental well-being of players
  7. Manage the program within its established budget
  8. Schedule and conduct regular practice sessions to ensure student-players are prepared for competition
  9. Arrange a competitive game schedule with approval by the Director of Athletics
  10. Coordinate off-season activity, practice schedules, and competition schedules
  11. Develop strategies to motivate maximum level of individual and team athletic performance and appropriate personal and social conduct within the mission of Newman University
  12. Provide guidance and input on games selected for varsity and non-varsity competition
  13. Communicate with IT on equipment upgrades, updates, and maintenance
  14. Participate and assist with fundraising, promotional, and public relations events within the community including on-campus and off-campus events, specifically including booster club activities and community engagement/service projects
  15. Organize team travel when required with approval of the Director of Athletics
  16. Plan, conduct, and manage camps, clinics, or leagues, as appropriate, to help market the
    program to potential students and donors
  17. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics

Required Qualifications/Education/Experience/Skills/Training:
  1. Bachelor's degree required; Master's Degree preferred
  2. Experience with competitive Esports involving team-based multiplayer online video games
  3. Must possess a valid driver's license and pass a motor vehicle check
  4. Expert knowledge of multiple games including some combination of League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, CS:GO, etc.
  5. Possess knowledge of Windows 10 and 11 operating systems, game console operation and related accessories
  6. Possess knowledge of standard audio/visual connections
  7. Effective leadership and strong oral and written communication skills
  8. Ability to work with diverse community of students, faculty, administrators and professional colleagues
  9. Ability to operate a program within budget parameters
  10. Strong relationship building skills
  11. Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary
  12. Must be willing to be certified in First aid and CPR

It shall be the responsibility of the head coach to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and to monitor the activities regarding compliance of all assistant coaches and other administrators within the program who report directly or indirectly to the head coach (Bylaw 11.1.2).
