Job description

Company Overview

Durwest has been a trusted leader in Construction and Project Management for over 40 years, with a strong presence on Vancouver Island and a reputation for successfully delivering complex projects with precision, collaboration, and care.

We are in an exciting period of growth and transformation. We have new leadership, a revitalized brand, and an elevated commitment to operational excellence and the Durwest Building Experience.

We are actively seeking professionals who take ownership, embrace growth, and build lasting relationships; individuals who are ready to help us shape the next chapter of Durwest.

Role Overview

Durwest is hiring an Assistant Superintendent to support the Superintendent in coordinating all day-to-day on-site construction activities, contributing directly to the safe, on-schedule, and quality delivery of complex projects. This role is central to maintaining site order, documentation, and compliance, ensuring that the right information reaches the right people at the right time.

As an Assistant Superintendent, you will work closely with subcontractors, suppliers, site personnel, and the broader project team, acting as a key coordination point that keeps daily operations moving efficiently. Your work will help build the foundation for project success while accelerating your own growth as a construction professional through meaningful, hands-on leadership experience.

This is an exciting opportunity to step into a role with increasing responsibility for a project where your initiative and attention to detail are both visible and valued. If you are a motivated, organized construction professional who is hungry to grow into a lead site leadership role and thrives in a dynamic, team-oriented environment, this position is the right next step.

Key Focus Areas

Project Support + Site Coordination

  • Support the Superintendent in monitoring daily site activities, reviewing drawings, specifications, and contract documents to ensure accurate field execution and alignment with project plans and schedules.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, and inspections under the direction of the Superintendent, tracking material deliveries and identifying and escalating risks to schedule, budget, or safety before they become critical.

Documentation + Reporting

  • Maintain organized project documentation including daily site logs, inspection reports, and deficiency lists, and support the preparation of accurate daily progress updates for timely submission to the project team.
  • Participate in site meetings with consultants, clients, and municipal representatives, and assist the Superintendent in tracking RFIs, shop drawings, and technical documents to ensure timely follow-up.

Site Safety + Quality Control

  • Promote a safe job site in compliance with WorkSafe BC regulations and Durwest Health & Safety policies, supporting the Site Safety Representative with toolbox meetings, site orientations, and safety inspections.
  • Identify and report safety hazards promptly and assist with quality control inspections, checking work against project specifications and escalating deficiencies to the Superintendent for resolution.

Team Support + Professional Development

  • Work collaboratively with all on-site personnel, trades, and consultants, leading by example in upholding Durwest's values and providing day-to-day direction to site staff and junior team members as assigned.
  • Actively seek opportunities to take on increasing responsibility and develop the skills needed to advance into a Superintendent role.

Who You Are

You are a reliable, hands-on construction professional – organized, clear-communicating, and genuinely passionate about the work. You manage competing priorities with ease, earn trust through your follow-through, and are comfortable with digital tools across reporting, scheduling, and safety. You're eager to grow, collaborative by nature, and motivated to be a core part of building great teams and great sites.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of construction experience, including at least 1–2 years in a field supervision, site coordination, or assistant superintendent role on commercial, institutional, or multi-residential projects.
  • Working knowledge of construction drawings, schedules, specifications, and contract documents, with familiarity with WorkSafe BC regulations, site safety requirements, and quality control processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with project management, scheduling, or safety platforms is a strong asset.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a proactive mindset and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship abilities with a focus on building trust and performance.
  • Trade certification, diploma in construction management, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Considered an asset:

  • Experience delivering seismic upgrade or structural retrofit projects
  • Practical experience with LEAN construction methods
  • OFA Level 1 and additional safety certifications
