Overview
Summary:
The Deckhand (Seasonal Position) assists with vessel operations, ensuring proper maintenance and adherence to emergency procedures for the safety of the vessel and its passengers. This role requires flexibility to work on an as-needed basis, supporting operations as required by the General Manager.
Pay:
$23.00- $25.00
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
  • Handle lines for docking and undocking operations
  • Assist with taking on fuel and water
  • Manage gangway handling and trash removal
  • Perform basic vessel and engine maintenance
  • Act as a key crew member in implementing emergency procedures, adhering to the emergency checklist, and explaining any deviations
  • Apply knowledge of initial actions for man overboard and vessel flooding scenarios
  • Participate in crew training and periodic emergency drills
  • Provide assistance and information to passengers as needed
  • Maintain cooperative and professional relationships with crew members and other employees

Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply emergency and fire regulations, emergency procedures, emergency equipment, and systems applicable to vessel operation
  • Knowledge of proper vessel handling and docking techniques
  • Basic understanding of vessel maintenance practices
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees
  • Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance daily

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) to two (2) years of maritime industry experience
  • Current CPR and first aid certifications
  • Ability to pass required drug testing

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience on a passenger vessel

Working Conditions
Vessel with a passenger capacity up to 100. Exposure to inclement weather conditions and potential rough seas. Physically fit to perform strenuous work and able to lift up to 50 lbs. on an ongoing basis. Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs. on an occasional basis.
