Job Title: Senior Manager, North American Payroll Operations (US & Canada)
Role Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and highly experienced Senior Manager of Payroll Operations to lead our North American payroll function. This is a high-visibility, mission-critical leadership role responsible for the end-to-end oversight of multi-cycle payroll processing for a large, diverse workforce in the US and Canada. You will drive operational excellence, ensure rigorous compliance with SOX and tax regulations, and lead a team of professionals in delivering exceptional service quality. The ideal candidate is a strategic problem-solver who can balance high-volume transactional accuracy with long-term process improvement and technology modernization.
Key Responsibilities
• Regional Leadership: Direct the full-cycle payroll function for North America, ensuring timely and accurate processing for a complex mix of hourly and salaried employees.
• Compliance & Audit: Serve as the primary steward for SOX compliance, internal controls, and external regulatory requirements. Manage all federal, state/provincial, and local tax filings, including year-end W-2 and T4 processing.
• Financial Integration: Oversee payroll-related accounting activities, including General Ledger (G/L) reconciliations and partnership with Finance and Accounting teams for month-end and year-end closing.
• Strategic Partnership: Collaborate with Compensation, Benefits, HRIS, and Legal departments to reconcile cross-departmental data impacts and support executive reporting (including proxy data).
• Team Development: Manage, mentor, and counsel a multi-level payroll team, fostering technical competency and a culture of continuous improvement.
• System Stewardship: Lead testing and implementation for payroll system enhancements. Maintain comprehensive procedure documentation and serve as the primary liaison for third-party vendor management.
• Data Integrity: Audit and analyze data flows between HR and Payroll systems to ensure the security, integrity, and synchronization of all employee records.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field.
• Experience: * 5+ years of experience managing an in-house payroll system for a large-scale organization.
• Proven track record leading direct and indirect teams in a fast-paced environment.
• Technical Mastery:
• Deep knowledge of US and Canadian payroll laws, tax administration, and garnishment processing.
• Experience with complex HRIS platforms (e.g., SuccessFactors, Employee Central, or similar Enterprise systems).
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate and resolve complex payroll/tax discrepancies.
• Attributes: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels. Must maintain the highest standards of confidentiality and data security.
Preferred Credentials
• Prior experience implementing or upgrading in-house payroll and timekeeping systems.
• Experience managing payroll within a manufacturing environment with complex hourly timekeeping requirements.
• Professional certification (e.g., CPP - Certified Payroll Professional).
